so its been awhile since I've been here but I was talking to the cox bros. awhile back and they said that indy would make a head but it was oh my god :shock: expensive. but you get two for around 15k :lol: . But to make it worth their while those that are interested we could approach them with the idea? the more they see a market they could be tempted to help us all out.

Mopar Performance crate engines only sell a few motors each month, I believe less than 30, but the program is economically viable and brings prestige to the Mopar brand name. The market for custom SL6 parts is somewhat less than a few a month.

There are plenty of '50s Dodge and Desoto Hemi cores that would make good projects but there are scant aftermarket parts for those motors. These forgotten motors sit on garage floors all over the USA.

I can't even find a OEM style BBD SL6 choke well setup.

Indy will build Slant heads about 3 days after monkeys fly out of your ass. :shock:

Tim, have you followed the other Mopar boards to see what the crate engine is doing for Mopar Performance? It ain't pretty no more. :cry:

I was hoping someone would convince Doug Dutra to fire up the forge and make a performance aluminum head for the slant... :wink:


Theoretically if you had gobs of time..A machine shop and some experience setting molds with a forge you should be able to make a head

All the water jackets intake exhaust ports...It would be complicated.

If you were worried about quality control just make the mold larger so you could plane it down to perfection where it bolted to the engine and exhaust/intake

C'mon Doug...Aren't you getting tired of being the guy who just makes Dutra Duals?..And the guy that brought the hyper pak back...

This is a what have you done for us lately kind of world...

About time for another legendary entry into the slant chapter...

Of course I am sort of half kidding...

Still it would be way cool to have a bolt on head that would add 50 horsepower or more...Something that comes with oval ports..

I do not think indy would ever even consider making a alloy slant head...I mean 30,000 for a one off....Yeah that would be so practical

I wonder if they would consider it if say 50-100 guys signed on to buy them though..Might be enough to make a run...Still they would be stupidly expensive.....$1000 bare casting I would say...That is more than some guys pay for their rides....Only a few people gonna shell out that kind of dough...And that kills it instantly

I have been down this street with Indy before and had Russ laugh in our faces when we asked him if he was interested in doing a head for us. This was at Clay City at a Southern Classic, and there were about 6 of us ther looking for a head at the time.

He did however offer us a stock iron head with a fresh valve job for $1000. :roll:

Knock your socks off though. Maybe you'll be the lucky one. :D

Don't get up-set at the less then warm response to this subject, there has alway been a lot of discussion about a "new tech" SL6 head but no one is willing to put out all the time and money needed to get it done.

Someday there will be an aftermarket SL6 head, it is a matter of time. (and money) Business is business and for the last 47 years the "return on investment" has not been there. If I ever do it, it will be a "labor of love" more then a sound business decision.

Dennis and Doug understand what's going on with this subject. For the rest of you who are optimistic.
Indy didn't want to say HELL, NO to somebody like the Cox brothers. (Indy does know who they are and what they do, and the potential business Indy could get from them.)
The exhorbitant price for an alloy head, made by Indy is a nice way of saying "Get Lost".
They know damn well nobody is going to fork over that kind of dough for a 1/2/3-off, all the while knowing the return will be marginal for the amount involved.

They didn't say they WOULDN'T do it, but knew that those asking the question also wouldn't front the bucks.

Doug.....you better hope I don't win the lotto. If I do, about the fourth thing I do will be to call you and ask how much you need to push your design into the preliminary casting stages. (Like you said.....a labor of love.)

The reality of the aluminum Slant head market is that the Slant world is so small that you can not get a true consensus of what anyone really wants. There may be a dozen cars in the world that would actually benefit from having an alloy head, and there are no more than 3 or 4 of them who want anything close to what everyone else wants. :shock:

It's really not that big of a deal, sort of like building your own house.

If you can take off a year from work and build your own house you can save a lot of money :) If you never work again, think of all the money you can save!


It'll probably happen someday, look at the new parts for the flathead Ford. But that sucker came out in '32 and for years the market was mostly '40s style stuff. The wave of CNC equipment, and I hate to say the word, China, means that the technology is getting cheaper.

You know that some people will do anything...

read an article today on a Stovebolt 6 chevy...The Guy was not happy with any of the cast heads with oversize valve jobs similiar to what clifford offers for the slant...So he looked at a brand new set of bowtie aluminums with oval ports...Cut each head chopped off a cylinder ...Welded the 2 pieces back together...had it milled and machined and put it on his race car...

A few holes had to be drilled and there was a ton of measure once, measure twice...But the point is that when someone gets committed to making something work....Amazing things can and usually do happen.

The slant is not as easy to do this with....But it just leads me to believe that someone will come up with this...

I mean once upon a time people were crying out for Someone to remake Hyper packs...And it happened...

I guess they need to restore a valiant on Boyd Coddington's show...So they can have a aluminum head made...With a 284 stroker...baddest 6 in town or something like that.... Custom Boyd wheels...paint interior the whole shot...

Someone write the show and tell them it has to be done!

Have anyone tried to heat bottom of plenum area where carb is on hyper pack? Will this cut down the fuel wetting issues? Or the runners is simply
too long at all to keep warmed effectively?

I'm considering this custom long runner manifold style with a carb on 2.2.

That has been going on for years. Bruce Sizemore was cutting up Boss 351 heads back in the '70's to use on his 300 Ford motor. :shock:
