I've been posting some questions of you the past few days regarding the Holley 1920 on my 69 Valiant 225. More and more, I believe that the carb has been rebuilt in the past.

This morning, so that I could move the car around, I decided to throw in a Sorenson rebuild kit so I could start it.

Came across a couple of things.

1. When I pulled the main well and economizer body out, there was no pump return spring in the carb or in the repair kit.

2. The needle and seat assembly was different. The old one was all brass. The new one has a white plastic band around it near the tip inside the body of the carb. I thought, ok., that must be the manufacturer's way of protecting the assemble and it probably pulls off. Nope. Much to secure on the assemble to pull off. Is this how it should be used?

Thanks for your help.

No pump spring is certainly going to be a problem. That's not a pump return spring, it's a pump drive spring. Except in the earliest 1920s (1962-63 models) the accelerator pump is spring-driven. Opening the throttle pivots the plastic accelerator pump cam's blocking tab out of the way of the pump stem, which permits the spring to drive the pump. Closing the throttle pulls the pump back against spring tension and holds it there until the throttle is opened again. So, no spring = no accelerator pump. And no, it's not included in even the best carb kits.

The nylon-tipped needle/seat assembly is meant to be that way. It is, as you suspected, a design variant and it's OK to use that way.

But it sounds as if I'd better step up my efforts to find you a new carb.
