Contrary to popular belief/advertising claims, there is no such thing as an "all-season" tire. There are many places where there's no winter to speak of, enabling the year-round use of ordinary tires, but that's different.

In places where winter actually happens, winter tires—four of them—are mandatory. And the Finns make really, really good ones. Nokian Hakkapeliittas, they are, and they are the ne plus ultra of the breed. Toronto got heavy snow all day today, topped off by rain followed quickly by freezing rain. Despite my driving a vehicle ludicrously inappropriate for the conditions (a 2WD pickup truck with nothing in the bed, i.e., almost no weight over the drive wheels) , I had little trouble driving home from work through snowy, icy, slippery roads.

One thing I didn't know until this evening is where the name came from

Errr... I also had no trouble getting home from work today, on the clear, warm & dry roads... despite my driving of the vehicle, inappropriatly for the conditions!

Lets see...tonight I was outside spraying off the housing of my disassembled rear end...last weekend hauled the 225 out from behind the garage on a wagon (in between rain storms)...yeah CA weather really sucks.

Ah Nokians! My good wife has 4 225/55/16 Hakkappolittas on her AWD TSI Talon.....It makes a snowy day into World of Outlaws in White.

I have 4 205/70/14 Hakks for the Valaint ......they trump 4x4 with all season tires.

The bad part about them is they lasy about 10 minutes at 80mph on a hot dry road.

In fact its just about time to put on the summers......we had beer and chips in the sun at the beach yesterday afternoon,,,,I had my shirt off for mebbe 10 mins....


The local tire shop tells everyone Hakkappolliitta means "traveller"

Id say 30% of vehicles have them on in the winter here....

another %30 will have Blizzac knockoffs

The rest use all seasons and stay home on snowy days

Unfortunately they don't have any in my size.... The tires on my pickup are starting to wear. 285/75R16's in an "E". If I put anything skinnier on there, the diesel boat anchor up front sinks my truck in the muck.

Looks like a nice tire. I've got BJGoodrich K0's on the Jeep. New last year. They work pretty good in the slippery stuff. In mud they're outstanding.
When they wear out, I'll check the Nokian's out.
