As long as I have a million other projects in progress on my Dart...

I am switching the front suspension to the '73-76 stuff so the lug pattern is larger now and I am trying for 350 to 400 h.p. with the EFI/turbo...

Will a 8 1/4" Rear end out of the same donor car (as the front suspension) be strong enough to allow for the occasional tire abuse?

Every search I did talked about 8 3/4"ers or Phord rear swaps so is there a reason why the 8 1/4" rear doesn't get considered?

I've got a '72 Polara w/ a centrifugally supercharged 360 in it and an 8 1/4 in it. Been that way for about 6 years, ~30,000 miles, dozens of passes at the track on slicks. It's still holding up, much to my surprise.

I think that the 8 1/4 is stronger than it gets credit for, but it's still got c-clip axles, and that's the little nagging thought that bugs me about it. It's what i've got in my 360 Dart, too, although I'm planning on moving it into my /6 car.

As I recall... the 8 1/4 also has a roller axle bearing set-up that rides directly on the axle shaft as the "inner race", if the rollers wear or get damage, you need a new axle shaft. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Years ago I set-up most of my cars with 8 3/4 rears, just because I liked the "drop-out" center gear section. I am lucky I collected all that stuff when I did.
I can't believe the $$$ the 8 3/4 parts get these days and the units never seems to pop-up in the wrecking yards anymore.

Cool!!! The wife said it was in the mail. Maybe this day will turn out better than I thought it would. (I ran out of paint in the middle of painting the small parts for the Superbird I am restoring and had to drive an hour to get more  )

According to a parts place up here(Lordco) you can get repair bearings that somehow ride on a different part of the axle for the ford 8.8. MAYBE the mopar 8 1/4 has something similar, have not checked.
