Cleaned up a head on 1970 Valiant. Ran engine Hot gapped the .01 intake and .02 for exhaust.

All went well . Car sat for 1 week, he started it yesterday and it ticked big time for about 1-2 seconds then all went quiet. I swear it sounded like empty Hydraulic Lifters filling. I thought this was a Solid Lifter engine?

If you were able to adjust the valves (because there was an adjustor), then it is a solid-lifter engine. The first production test of hydraulic-lifter slant-6s was in '78, and all of them were hydraulic starting in '81.

Sometimes the "stretch and yawn" sounds of a dry engine can sound a lot like it's hydraulic.

I think around 81 . My 80 Volare' was solid. it has never happen to me but I have heard that a sticky valve guide may happen momentarily after sitting for a while. Just a thought.
