Howdy

I gotta get this done in one session- it's my daily ride.
It is a 904 in a 73 abody.

I am planning to:
-go as high as possible under 4 jackstands
-unhook speedo, driveshaft, shift linkage, kickdown, flexplate, maybe exhaust pipe after collector
-support motor and trans then unbolt trans from motor

Here's where I need a plan with experience so I can do it right the first time.
Can I unbolt the trans mount (spool type) and slide the trans back on the crossmember far enough to remove and install a torque converter?
Should I drop the crossmember?

If there is an easy way to do it let me know. Maybe I have the order wrong? Any advice is appreciated.

Kevin

Sorry to see you didnt get it done Wed. Ive always pulled the trans or engine to swap. Drop the trans and move it back to get in there.
Call me if you need to.

No, you need to pull the X member and drop the trans out.

I would highly recommend also pulling the trans out from under the can and installing a new front seal in the trans. I have had a few converter swaps result in a BIG LEAK out the front seal. Even newish seals might seat on a new converter differently and start to leak. Spend $10 and 20 min and replace the seal so you don't have to pull the trans again in a week or a month. I replace mine every time now. I have done a converter or trans swap like this at least 50 times.

I put a jackstand under the rear of the motor oilpan, then use a large jack with a block of wood to bring the trans down. You may want to let the motor down a bit to allow more clearance to drop the trans out.

Unless you have a good place to do it, and good jacks I find it easier to just pull the engine and install i that way. I do this most the time if I am by myself, or dont have a concret floor to work off of. Its also safer and turns out to be less mess with fliuds.

This is the way I do it on my car too. I can have the engine out faster than I can the trans.

I have no accessories other than the alternator though, and I have my cooler separate from the radiator so I don't have to undo the lines to pull the rad. :D
