I think that the temp guage in my Daughters 72 Valiant may be reading a little too much to the right hand side of the guage.Does anyone know where approxamatly 180-195 degrees shoulbe on the factory guage?
I thought that the engine may be running hot but I used a infrared thermometer and shot the water in the top radiator tank and it read 177-185 degrees and then shot the thermostat housing and it read 187-195 degrees ,seems like normal temps to me and the coolant is flowing well and not puking out the overflow hose and I can take the cap off while running with no gushing or pressure build up,also there are no bubbles at all in the coolant while running.
I have already installed a new sending unit and the thermostat is a practically new 180 degree Stant. The temp guage reads on the second small mark on the guage about 3/4 over on the face.
Any help is as always very appreciated.
Thanks

Mine's a 318 and the temp indicator pointer is just a needle width past even with the lower index of the arc when I'm indicating 180-185 with themometer in top tank and IR reading at the thermostat housing. Don't know whether this factory design spec or not, but works for me. Hope this helps.

Dan,I apolagize for not getting back to you but have been away from the computer for a few days but found that the car was actually running hot.I tested with a aftermarket guage and it read about 220 after a long idle session.
I traced the problem to a semi-stopped up radiator and have a less stopped up radiator in for the time being until I can lay hands on a new one.
Thanks for your help
