I was thinking about installing a tranny cooler in my '78 Volare. Not in addition to the one in the radiator, but mounting a tranny cooler near the back of the car, and running the lines from the trans back to it. I would think that a cooler mounted near the back of the car, away from the engine bay, would stay cooler. I removed the stock fuel tank and installed a fuel cell, so there is plenty of space in the back.
Am I way off here? Any opinions are welcome, thanks.

Wes, personally I prefer to put them in front of the radiator so there is always air passing through them when the engine is on.

I have seen race cars with a cooler tucked up under the passenger floor though.

My biggest concern with one in the back would be that if air can get to it, so can a rock.

I am somewhat paranoid though.

A tranny cooler needs airflow to cool.

How does it get airflow in the back?

Something else you might want to consider. A cold trans doesn't work as well as a warm trans. If this is a cold-weather driver, you could end up running the trans too cool. This would be a situation where the radiator cooler may actually put some heat back into the trans.

If it's a fair-weather driver, the point is moot.

Thanks for the replies fellas.
The tranny cooler would still get air where I had planned to mount it in the back. I guess the main reason I wanted to mount the cooler in the back was to have less stuff under the hood. Also, I'm in Texas, and it doesn't get that cold here.
I might just leave well enough alone though, we'll see.

It may not around Houston, but it does up here on the Caprock!

Wes- if you are interested, I have a Transcool brand tranny cooler new in the box I bought for my brother's van before I found out he already had one.

PM me for more info if you are interested. I'll give you a good price!

Okay, if I install a tranny cooler, I'll probably mount it in front. I'll just reroute the lines a bit.

Okay, I finally got a trans cooler installed; it's mounted in front of the radiator, but not attached to the rad. You can't see it unless your'e 2 or 3 feet in front of my car. I'm pretty happy with the installation, I haven't seen any leaks yet. Rubber(?) lines to steel lines, to rubber and back into the original lines. It looks a little cleaner under the hood, which is always a plus.
I'll be watching it for the next several days. Stay tuned! LOL!

Oh yeah, I'll see if I can get some pics if anyone is interested.

You'll need to put the photos on a hosting site, like PHOTOBUCKET, then post the link here, like THIS
