Great weekend, and good turnout of some very nice cars. Perfect weather.

17 cars there, including Mr. Glen Terry from Oroville, CA. Great to meet him and chat about all things slanted. We Eastern folks really appreciate him coming all the way to a race over here. Killer car and a fabulous guy. He is hanging with Meril Bruner today, and will head back West on Tuesday.

I know the suspense is killing you, isn't it...

Meril Bruner was the big winner of this 50 pt race, for the Grand Old Man's 2nd race win of the year. Ron Parker was a very close second in this all footbrake final.

Glen made it around Leighton Drake in the 1st round, and Larry Chesney in the 2nd, then got the bye in the 3rd round into the semis against Ron Parker. A razor close double breakout race put Ron P, ace GA footbraker into the finals. Ron (0.018) and Glen (0.020) had almost identical lights, and Glen edged him at the stripe but everyone's cars were speeding up and Ron broke out by 0.02 less (about 2 ft difference in the noses of the cars at the end).

Seymour kept all the records, so I can't give a full report. It'll be out in the next SSRN. Seymour had his white car running mid 14s. Everyone's cars were slower in the exceptionally poor air.

I made it one round in Slant 6, and 3 rounds into the semis in Sportsman in the ol' '68. Best 1/4 (in recent years) of 16.80 @ 81. Hamby put me out in the 2nd round when I had him covered by a mile but didn't let up early enough and broke out - dang! I had one 0.009 "package" for the weekend and a bunch more 0.100 and better, which I was quite happy about.

Dan Gravatt drove my '64 Dart. He and Phil Stoneback came down from Souderton, PA (10 hrs) and Phil raced his 70 Valiant.

Notable visitors were James Longhurst from Asheville, NC and Curt and Caitlin from Roanoke, VA. James cooked up a monster NC-style pork butt on a special smoker and we put together a big feed on Sat night. Curt and Caitlin came over to hang out and meet the folks and watch the racing. Curt is putting together a '64 Valiant.

Cheers,

Lou

Great report Lou...
I wonder if 'Possum Parker' had a side bet going on that quarter final race against Glen??
Ron is going to be tough to live with, for us West coast racers... having put our 'ringer' on the trailer.

I don't think anyone was betting, but could be...? We all have healthy respect for Glen, and he fit right in with the "heavy hitter" racers here. It was certainly a tough field.

Wow what a weekend. Got to meet Glen and his friend Joe I think cant remember any more. Me and Glen bench raced several hours and he is a great person this is what I expected and got. James cooked and Lou and Elane Foster put up a killer meal Sat nite and I stayed at the track until 11 o clock. Finaly got to beat that ole Storming Norman in the third round. Our race was so close the win light did not come on and I did not know I had won until we got our time slips. The killer Bees is everything they say they are and Glen proved why he is our 2007 and probaly 2008 National champion. I staged to deep against Meril but knew I would have to kill the tree on him but pulled the trigger a bit soon. I was stressed after racing Phil, Gary Bruner, Norman Foster, Glen Terry, then Meril Bruner. Try getting around those folks. Maybe I can get out there next year lets see what happens. Thanks Ron Parker :D

I had a great time also. Met up with some old friends and made a bunch of new ones. I was a little worried about my car since I broke a motor mount and throttle return spring on the way down. Lou hooked me up with a mount, tools and a place to work. We were kind of relieved to be eliminated early due to the long drive back of 540 miles and having to be at work this morning. I dropped Dan off at 11:30 and got home myself at 11:45. Congratulations to Meril for the victory, I don't feel bad at all for being elimiated by the #2 guy there.

I would like to thank everyone for making my daughter Kelly, feel welcomed at her first ever drag race. After we got home she couldnt stop talking about how nice everyone was and how much she enjoyed the weekend and she plans on doing some test and tune to get more practice.
My wife and myself really enjoyed seeing the Slant family for the third year and will be back next year hopefully with my 60 Val and much more practice for myself as well(and a line lock) and try to be more than rookies.
I really enjoy the tightnit family style atmosphere of the Slant racing community like watching half a dozen fellow racers jump in and help Rodney Hargis replace a cylinder head gasket when his blew or listening to Merle Bruner tell storys or just watching how well everyone gets along together in the pits. Thanks again from HyperValiant and family.

Glad Phil and Dan could make it down and had fun.

Glad that Mark and especially Kelly had a good time.

The footbrakers have been doing very well this year, which is nice to see. Congrats to Ron P and Meril for the killer performances.

Either Meril or Norm are in 2nd place, I think. Who will win Clay City???

Let's keep it rollin'!

Lou

I just got back from Bristol today, more about the trip home later! It was a fantastic event. The racing was close and dramitic, the weather was the nicest I have ever seen there, and there we an awful lot of really good people who made this an event to remember. With all the difficulties even getting to a race these days, it was encourgaing to see an event of this caliber can still happen.

The highlight of the race had to be Glen Terry's appearance. Everybody wanted to see what a real live Killer Bee racer was really like. Glen made lots of friends and showed why he won the championship last year. It took Glen quite a few runs to adapt to the new track, but by race day he was in top form with a couple of .018 lights in eliminations. As Lou told you, he lost that ultra close race with Ron Parker in the fourth round but Glen showed everybody what a champion is made of. That race between Glen and Ron has to be one of the best of the year. Kudos to Ron for coming through in the clutch to smoke his bee!

And how about the winner Meril Bruner? He could do no wrong. At whatever age he is, he is having the time of his life! He brought all three of Lukus' kids up to the winner's circle for the offical picture and was Meril beaming! Meril cut an .002 light in the third round to take out Ron Hamby and then followed it up with a perfect .000 on his fourth round bye run. It isn't hard to see why Ron Parker was a little itchy in the final. Meril's truck was running dead on too. 14.069, 14.08, and 14.084 on his last three runs.

Special visitors included Brian Mimken's wife and both his parents who watched Brian as he did very well in Sunday's sportsman competition. Brian got into the third round where he lost to eventual winner Steve Foley in a close race. Lou's wife Chris was there but the real surprise was Jim and Faith Cox celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary. James Longhurst fed us all on Saturday night with a delicious pork roast that he cooked for us at the track.

The Drakes, Chesneys, Bruners of both kinds, Hargis', Hambys, Charapichs, and Fosters were all out in force. Phil Stonebeck and Dan Gravatt made it all the way from Pennsylvania, I was there from Minnesota, and of course Glen and his firend Joe from California. Being a three day event, we all had a lot of time to socialize together and you just have a good feeling in your heart when ever you think back on it.

I have tabulated the points through Bristol but I haven't seen any news from St. Louis yet. Glen Terry is still the overall leader, but you can construct a scenario by which Norman Foster, or Meril Bruner, who are tied for second could catch up. When I have more time I will post the actual points totals in the racing section. With one more race in each area, the Easterners lead the overall points race by a scant 11 points so turnout at Redding and Clay City will be critical.
