My car was idling a little rough, and dieseled a couple of times recently. Well, sure enough, my Remflex gasket is blown on the back part.

I had the head resurfaced about 3 months ago and new studs put in by the machine shop. I gave them some Permatex High Temp Thread Sealant to seal the stud threads. However, I appears I may have a small coolant leak at the last (closest to the firewall) stud. My questions:

Do all the head studs go to water jackets?

What is the best stuff for sealing the studs?

BTW, I retorqued the manifold nuts after installation and first run and found out later I'm not supposed to do that with these gaskets if that would make a difference.

Nopers. Far as I know, none of them do.

There isn't really a sealant you put on those. The best thing to do would be puttng an Anti-seize compound on them, so you can easily remove them later.

Techically no, you shouldn't need to retorque them. Once they are torqued, they tend to stay that way.

The first and last studs go into coolant on almost all heads, and some heads all go into coolant.

I use Teflon pipe sealer on the first and last, and never seize on the rest.

Here we go again. This has been discussed many times on here. Some say the studs do not go into water, some say just the end studs go into water. Every head I have done, has all the studs into water. I use lock tite thread sealer.

RDJ,

Several of the manifold studs on the later 76 peanut plug head intersect with the water jacket and leak like a sieve if you don't use some red Loctite. On my rebuild the first time I put the manifolds on I didn't use Loctite, I used the teflon sealer in a tube. That lasted about 3 days....wrecked the first gasket.
The next time I used copper Ultra gasket sealer and and that didn't work either. That last stud against the fire wall leaked like crazy wasting another gasket. I found that someone before me had put a helicoil in that hole and the metal was only about 1/4" thick at that location. So I pulled the huge helicoil out and JB Welded a new longer helicoil in it's place. Then I took a stud and JB Welded it in place. That is why I use brass Dorman nuts with some silver Never Sieze on the studs. They hold the required 5" lbs of torque just fine for the RemFlex gasket. In fact they will hold 10" pounds just fine too if your using the Aussie, Corteca or stock FelPro gasket.

Seal them with one of the Loctite's and good luck!
