help i have a 72 swinger 225 with a super six
it runs OK low power on hills though.
the big problem is oil consumption.some tail pipe smoke but the big smoker is the breather cap.i've changed the PVC valve.the previous owner did a valve job .Is it time for me to rebuild the engine ?I have a parts vehicle which ran well can i just swop the engine or should i rebuild it.Can you reccomend any books or articles on rebuilding the slant six.

Check the pvc system, the hose and/or passages might be clogged. Common problem. Go to the articles section of this site for info on rebuilding

Could I also have a pvc problem?? I changed ait filter on my 1980 Volare after 5k miles. There was a coating of oil on the air filter.
What would cause this? The engine has only 53k miles & burns no oil.( not enough to notice smoke & I dont have to add oil between 3k miles changes)

Check to see if you get strong suction at the pcv valve. I have seen the passageway through the base of the carb and the hole in the manifold get carbon clogged.
I have also seen the carb to intake gasket get installed incorrectly, which blocks-off the passage completly.

I will check the suction. I dont thing the carb has ever been off, so I doubt the gasket is incorrect. The carb is pretty scary ( 1980 California Smog issue . I beleive it is a Holley 1945. In any event , it has no mixture adjusting screw. it seems to be broken off. it runs fine & starts right up at 3am to go to work, so I dont want to fiddle with it just yet.
I will asso check the pcv valve,

on my 72 swinger I've changed the pvc valve, the hoses I'll check the carb gasket but I'm pretty sure I put it properly.
Is there anything else that could cause copious smoking and oil blowing?
Is it a sign that I need new rings?

Kevin, the mixture screw for the 1945 is there, it is just inset inside the base and needs a 1/8" or 3/32" allen wrench. Look at the carb base from the right rear corner, It is part 16 on the attached diagram, except for the slotted head. Part 15 is the anti-tamper cap, which was probably removed at the first tuneup to allow tampering.

By the way, the PCV system on my 190K mile engine is serviced regularly (replace PCV valve, clean hoses, breather cap, carb passages) and I still replace my air filter every 8K miles because it gets sooty. Blowby happens! Schuck's has air filters 2 for $7 right now.

Thanks for the info. I have the Chrysler service manual & it has the same pic ( showing a slotted head screw) That's why I thought it was broken!! Now that I know it is actually an allen head ,it makes more sense. And, yes, the tamper cover is not there. I should replace some of the hoses anyways, since they are brittle.

A compression test will get you pointed in the right direction. Find out what each cylinder has for compression and post the results.

I did the compression test...results were what I feared: I had 120 in five cylinders, 30 in the No. 5 cylinder. I squirted in oil and got it up to 60.
Does this mean the rings are shot and it's rebuild time? Or is there anything else i should be checking?

You might as well pull the cylinder head if squirting oil in #5 helped raise the compression. I guess you could do a leakdown check first to see where you're losing compression for sure, but no matter what that tells you, the head has to come off. Look at the head gasket for giggles and grins, and look at the valves too... but it sounds like a piston ring problem to me... someone go ahead and say I'm wrong -I can take it - I'm used to it- after all I do have a wife!!!
