 Post subject: Spark advance question

My total advance of 30* is made up of 8* initial and 22* centrifugal in the dist. My question is, would a combo of 4* initial and 26* centrifugal give me the same results? How far from TDC can you stray before you want to make a change?

In general, the second choice will give you slightly worse throttle response and idle (especially with a hotter cam/comp), and similar total power. The first would be my preference, and I usually run more initial advance (at least 10 deg) on my motors.

I'm with Lou, I set my initial timming first to find the place where the idle and throttle response is good with out shut-down "run-on".

Once I find an initial setting I like, set the mechanical to get the needed total. The last step is selection and setting of the vacuum advance pod and spring rate.
