Short version : I fixed it!

Long version :

While in the shower this morning, I got the bright idea to rig up an alternate fuel supply to see if the tank and/or fuel line was the problem. Found a 1 liter Pepsi bottle, a foot long piece of 5/16" steel tubing, and got 3 feet of 5/16 fuel hose at the auto parts store for $1.05 . I wedged the Pepsi bottle in under one of the dual horns on the radiator support, ran the line to the fuel pump inlet, and filled the bottle with gas from a 1 gallon can I had laying around. Not a safe idea to say the least.

The problem was still there.

I then figured the next most likely restriction was the brass 90 degree elbow I had put on the fuel pump outlet to connect the flare fitting nut to. The inside diameter was not very big, and it makes a very sharp turn with no smoothness at all. So, back to the auto parts store. This time I got a fitting adapter which had 1/8" NPT on one end, and a 3/8" hose end on the other. I got that and a piece of 3/8" fuel hose they had left over from a roll. Went back and changed it over. I just pushed and clamped the hose over the flare end of the metal line.

On this road test, it worked! Wound it to 5300 rpm with no problem, and it shifts into 3rd gear and keeps on pulling now!

However, it's amazing how quickly a Slant Six will suck a 1 liter bottle dry at WOT. This run almost emptied it in less than a mile and 2 minutes of engine running time! Since my 1 gallon can was now empty, I decided it was time for test number 3 -- hook up the regular fuel line to the real fuel system. So I did, and it worked as well as the bottle fed system did! 5300 rpm in second, and it kept going in third gear as well.

All tests were performed on wet roads in the rain, so between that and the bottle fuel system, it was rather a tense day. But at least it's ready for Columbus now, fuel system-wise anyway.

When I switch everything over to my 1974 Duster, it will have a fuel cell, a high volume electric pump and regulator, and a full length 3/8" line. I'm not going through this headache again.
