I've finally been back to doing some work on the 65 convertible. I just completed a rebuild on the 1bbl Holey 1920 carb on the 225 slant 6. thankfully that got rid of the huge gas leak caused by the faulty accelerator pump. All my life I have worked on these slant 6's with my Dad. But I have to admit that Dad and I never really got good at tuning.

The problem I have now is that the idle seems too fast...I can't dial it down far enough for my taste; too hard on the tranny. This could be a linkage issues which I am investigating now. However another problem is that the car wants to stall when accelorting from a stop sign. If you just flutter the throttle first, it will go fine. But if you just give it gas straight, it will stall.

Help please in guiding me what to do. It is drivable, but just not right.

Is your throttle return spring strong enough to pull the linkage back all the way for a low idle? or is the linkage binding?

With the engine off and looking down the carb throat, pump the gas and tell us what you see.

1. Is there a huge stream of gas squirting into the throat?
2. Or almost nothing?

If you have healthy pump shot, then increase your base timing to at least 10 degrees.
If not, then check your pump linkages to be sure your getting full throw.

How much initial and mechanical timing do you have at 1000 and at 2000 rpm?

Ted, (and anyone else who was looking). Thanks for the ideas.

I continued fiddling with things on Sunday and discovered that when Dad reassembled the carb, the throttle plates were not quite indexed properly to the shaft that connects to the throttle linkage. The plates were binding slightly before going to full close (off center), therefor not allowing the linkage to come fully back so that the idle screws could be brought into play. i had thought it was binding somewhere else.

I cleared that up, which allowed the to properly use the idle mixture screws.

The hesitation is MUCH MUCH less. if you put your foot in it, it takes off like a scared rabbit now. if you are too gentle on it however it wants to die now.

Make sure the accelerator pump shot is strong and that it is timed correctly to off-idle throttle opening.
The same goes with the vacuum advance, it must be functional and "timed" so vacuum advance comes-in right when the throttle is being opened.
