Post subject: doc's oil pump matrix
PostPosted: Sat Jun 22, 2002 7:54 am
I have been reading the op failure stories and had a question. Are all (or most) of the failures on racing motors? If they are not all raced motors then perhaps there should be another section on the matrix to help identify the top rpm levels the motor has seen and the driving habits (amount of full throttle accelerations) or the like.

My Question is how many of these failed on street motors say under 5000-5500, even high performance street motors?

Thank you

We have seen the failures mostly with performance rebuilds but also in "street" type rebuilds.
I have to wonder if the average user out there, who has a failure, even knows about us or our efforts, so we may never know how many of the stock applications are failing. Melling tells me they continue to sell about 10,000 SL6 oil pumps each year! (most go to Mexico / South Am.)

We know that some stock applications do fail, the most recent in a mid 60s Truck set-up for a low RPM application. The Cox Boys helped with that engine build-up and reported that the pump gear fauled with-in the first 500 miles. It was replaced with a used gear off a factory pump and so far, no reoccurance.

Does anybody make an electric oil pump?

I've recently experienced an oil pressure failure. I haven't pulled the motor or performed an autopsy. I don't know the history of the motor. It was not the original motor but I suspect it was never rebuilt. The oil pressure just failed to come up at start-up one day. It was installed in a 4 spd '66 Cuda w/ some heavy suspension mods. I drove it pretty hard. If I had to guess, I suspect it was approaching 200K miles. If anybody is interested, I'll post the 'post mortem', so to speak.

Please let us know what you find, usually on high mile engines it's a bearing failure which causes this.
If it is a OP drive gear failure, please send me the failed parts so we can hardness test them.
