I have done a search and didnt find the awnser. Maybe I worded it wrong. Any way when I start my car the exhuast blows water and what I can only call soot out of the exhuast. What is causing this? Aftr it warms up it runs fine but is leaving sooty splotches all over my driveway. It is a 1965 225 |

Probably running a bit rich, maybe some ring blow by, and being winter you have some condensation in the exhaust gases. Not sure what to do about it... Edit: oh, california; nevermind about condensation.... |

It sounds like you need to check and adjust your choke and choke pull-off. See the article here. Carburetor operation and repair manuals (and some training movies) are posted here for free download. Your problem is not being caused by engine oil consumption. |

That was my big concern. I determined it wasnt an oil issue after repetedly checking the oil for a few days.

I lived in the Sacramento area until this year. When I turned on my car, I got the same thing in Antelope (14 miles northeast of Sacto). My wall in my garage had a big black spot. Or bunch of small spots. CA does have water in the pipes in the morning. My car was just running rich. |

When gasoline burns it produces water as part of the exhaust stream. When the pipes are cold that water condenses out and can drip from the tailpipe. After everything is warmed up it should be dry. Many mufflers have small holes in one or both ends to help drain the condensation. |

Carbon spots are result of condensate & carbon particles mixing, and getting blown out with the exhaust flow. Excessive carbon build-up most often is caused by incorrect choke adjustment to the rich side. A few other causes could be: out of adjustment valve lash; high float level; clogged air filter; and fouled spark plugs. Follow Dan’s recommendations first. Sometimes, if you don’t drive the car long enough to heat up the exhaust to the point that all the moisture is evaporated each time it is operated, carbon will be deposited on the ground in the form of black water droplets regardless of tune. Check that the muffler drain hole (3/32†or so) is open and working. If no hole is visible, perhaps the muffler was installed upside down, and is now on its top side. |
