I've gotten a 1975 /6 Duster for parts, and am taking it apart now. It has some good 'options', like manual steering and a 4 speed. I just pulled out the transmission, and it turned out to be an iron case non-overdrive A-833! It didn't have the cast-in ID pad on the right side, though. The clutch was a HD 10 inch assembly. Evidently the throwout bearing was locking up, because all 3 fingers of the Borg & Beck pressure plate were worn badly on the tips. This car sat and was started once in a while for 10 years in some guys' front yard out in the woods.

My big concern is the flywheel. All the starter teeth look ok, and there are no black spots on the friction surface. But I see radial (like spokes in a 20 inch bike wheel) lines all around it. They do not catch my fingernail when scraped across them. I've heard that these can be the start of stress cracks, which eventually results in an exploded flywheel. Can I have these marks machined out and be ok, or is this flywheel junk?

Every time I ask the auto parts people for the spring load on a pressure plate, they don't know and neither does their dumb computer system.

Have that flywheel resurfaced an my bet is that all those heat cracks will be gone. Take a real close look after the resurfacing, if there is a deep crack, you will still see it and that my be a concern if it's large.

I was told once by a machinist at a brake and clutch rebuild shop, that unless the radial crack lines reach around the counterbore(recess) shoulder they are not serious.

Car Model: 1962 plymouth valiant
REPLACE THE F-WHEEL REGARDLESS (PEACE-OF-MIND) AND HAVE THE TOTAL ENGINE ASSEMBLY BALANCED.

UPON BALANCING, THE TECH SHOWED ME A CRACK AT THE RADIUS WHERE THE FLANGE WAS CRACKING TOO.
