Here is a trip! I went to the bone yard and there was a 71 dart with disc brakes sitting there - I noticed that the lug pattern was the same as my 63 valiant and I thought " Huh - I thought by 71 they had gone to a different pattern. Then I looked for the rims, gone! But I reckoned they were 14" from the look of the car,

Im I wrong?

Anyway - I took the brakes, strange brakes - total of 4 cylinders per caliper - and a tube that runs from one side to the other. Unusually complicated for such a simple car.

The spindle arm looked basically the same as my 63 drums on my valiant so I bought-m and put m on - simple swap. No a-arms - No torsion bar changes, just spindle, rotor and caliper, the top knuckle fit fine and the bottom knuckle fit fine.

Have I blown it!?? I haven't finished the job, need the 14 inch rims that fit this small pattern, but they must be out there!!! Right?!!

I don't know, I asked about this last week and everyone said I needed alot more than I actually ended up buying and installing.

Any thoughts before I go further would be greatly appreciated, maybe I've messed up and don't know it yet, seeins I aint done.

thanks a bunch guys! :)

Boomer, you haven't "blown it" What you happened to run across was the somewhat rare & expensive early disc brake system. These were usually reserved for V-8 cars, or as a special-order option. As you noticed, they had four pistons/caliper, and these sometimes have problems gripping the rotor equally.

Yes, they were the small bolt pattern, and would have come with 14" rims. You can find rims, but those, too, are becoming difficult to locate, and there's very little available in the aftermarket.

What you were told earlier would have been the best overall to have done to your car, as the rim availibility is huge for the 4.5" pattern. It would have required an upgrade/change to the rearend at sometime, but the final results would have been much better for you.

Just outta curiosity, what did that brake system cost you? You might be able to sell it to somebody who's restoring an early A-body, (for a profit), then find the later system.

It can be a good score if the calipers are not frozen and the rotors still have some meat on them. Technically, since the calipers do not float like the later versions, when resurfacing the rotors, you are supposed to cut equal amounts off both sides. Sometimes that can severely shorten the rotor's life expectancy.
I have the same setup om my '64 Dart, and have never had anything to complain about.
PS If there was a brake booster on the donor car, it might be worth picking that up, too.

I have these on my '68 Dart, and it was a little pricey to get rebuilt calipers, but they work really nicely. Used the junkyard rotors and they were not warped at all. Mainly, they are nice if you want to keep your small-bolt wheels. I would bet they lock a little less easily than the later discs due to the 4 piston design, but I haven't done any testing on that.
