If I set my voltmeter to the continuity test setting, then check across the "+" and "-" posts on the coil, I get a tone. Should this be so? I would think that there should be no continuity between + and - on the coil. Am I right or wrong?

Still trying to suss out the reason for the goofy
electrical "issues" with the 225 /6 on the '66 Valiant.

You will have continuity between the + and - terminals. They are the two ends of the same wire. You should have a high resistance between the + and - terminals and the center terminal. If not, it's shorted inside. Different coils will give different readings.

Check the coil for bulges or leaking. That's a fairly common sign when they go bad, but they can look perfect and still fail.
