I can hear a slight knock in my engine. One person said its the typical "Slant Six Knock" Is there such thing as normal knocking in the slant six?

If you had a knock in your engine what would be your first steps in trying to fix it? Where would you go first?

Thanks for any help!

I don't know what a 'typical' slant six knock is, although I've had a couple that did knock. I had one that the PO had run out of oil on the freeway and driven for who knows how many miles. That one was fatal. I had another that knocked on start-up for almost 10 years before it died.
What can you do? You could try replacing the bearings in the engine while it's still in the car. Or just try different weights of oil, maybe that would quiet it down.

"Common" SL6 engine noise can be from the mechanical lifters, the con rod bearings or from piston "fit". In some cases a wrist pin (piston pin) can contribute to piston noise.

Adjust valves if it is a "ticking" noise, but there should always be a little noise from the lifter when adjusted correctly.

For the other noises, thicker oil or an engine rebuild are the solutions.

It could be your fuel pump making noise. I replaced my old one thinking it was going out, now the new one does the same thing.

That is worth checking out. I did see some very small metal fragments in the fuel filter.

I had a knock, took it to a shop, they wanted to replace the motor. I used a piece of heater hose as a stethoscope to locate the noise. It was actually the clutch. You usually don't have a bearing problem if the oil pressure is normal.

Every Slant I own has a knocking sound in it. The original motor in my Duster rattled just above idle the whole time I had it (4 years) and nothing ever fell out.:) Slantzilla makes all kinds of rattles and hammers, but so far nothing has exited either.:D
