I know in my Mark IV they started using retarded timing chains/belts and it is usually recommended that you get a chain from a pre-'71 motor so the timing is more accurate. I was wondering if this is the same thing for the /6. I have a 1980 and know that if they did anything to neuter an engine, it would exist on my car.

Should I look into an earlier model timing chain for this purpose or is it a non-issue?

No timing sets for the slant six were intentionally built with the cam retarded, but manufacturing variations exist. For example, the timing set in my brother's van was built six degrees advanced, which works great for me. Any time you replace the timing set on your motor, you should take the time to degree the cam and verify that the camshaft is installed in the proper relation to the crankshaft.

I had some Mopar Performance double roller sets that the dot on the cam gear was a tooth off. It's not supposed to be, but like Reed said, you're much better off to check to make sure.

Dennis is correct. When I installed the new timing gears and chain in Ryan's Dart it was stamped exactly 1 tooth off! I'll never install another cam or timing set without degreeing everything to make sure it is right!
