Post subject: Loose Flywheel bolts ??
PostPosted: Thu Oct 31, 2002 10:30 pm
I have been racing my old Valiant for 13 years. I have always used red locite on the flywheel to crankshaf bolts. Never had a problem till this year. I use a Ram 30# steel flywheel, balanced engine,Fluid damper and APR pro bolts. Both the surface of the flywheel and crankshaft are perfect shape. The bellhousing has been dailed in with the crankshaft. The damper shows no signs of leakage. The only way I found out about my problem was during a routine inspection of the clutch. One bolt the head was broken off,two bolts were loose and three were still at their proper torque. I have added considerable more HP to the engine and I am now going over the finish line at 6800 RPM. These bolts came loose after 32 runs down the track. Open for suggestions? ? ?\

Yes the bolts were all torqued just in case someone asks.

This is also a problem with the chevy L6 at high rpms. Twisted6 over at http://www.inliners.org has battled this problem with his 250. His solutions may be applicable to your situation.

Red LocTite is the toughest stuff they make. I, once, mistakenly put that stuff on a pipe fitting and I had to practically destroy it to take it apart.
Was the flywheel AND clutch cover balanced with the rest of the rotating/ reciprocating ass'y? If so, were the pieces "match-marked"? Was the match-marking maintained in the reassembly? Have you checked to see if the clutch is neutrally balanced?
If that doesn't sound any bells, I'd have the balance rechecked.
How was the clutch operation? Was it always smooth? If it wasn't always smooth, check for a bent clutch hub.

Could it be one bolt head failed from an unseen flaw and caused the other two to loosen?

Dave

Red has never worked for me on an auto so 4 sp will be worse. I clean everything good-use licktite primer T. and use locktite retaining compound. dont know the number but will forward it later. If that is not enough they make some that you need a tourch to un do ---I will try to find that number too. I cdan not stress enough to use locktite primer.
