This is a real general question, it is hard to get into detail with these.

I would say to change the rear end gearing to 3.23 or 3.55 and add a "Super Six" 2 bbl set-up. after that, free flowing exhaust is the next big improvement.

These types of parts can be found in your local junkyard for a pretty reasonable price so go do some looking.

By "beat an 8," I'll take that to mean a 15 second quarter mile time. That won't keep up with everyone, but there's likely to be quite a few V8's at the dragstrip you'll stand a fighting chance against. Besides which, sub-15 second slant sixes are usually either not street cars, or use nitrous and/or turbocharging.

To plant a naturally aspirated slant in the 15 second territory will require a well matched combination of engine and drivetrain parts. The Mopar Performance Six Cylinder Engine Manual includes a proven recipe for those kinds of timeslips. It basically requires a ported and milled cylinder head with large valves, two barrel, 350 cfm Holley carb, headers, a wilder cam, some suspension mods for good traction, and 4.10:1 gears.

There are quite a few other options if you want to spend less and not go quite as fast, want to experiment with nitrous (I'm not sure I would recommend trying a turbo without a lot more experience), or want to substitute a few different parts (such as a multi-carb intake or four barrel carb).

I have a 232ci Slant in my '66 Valiant that has run high 14's on street tires, and is a daily driver. I run 3.55 gears and an automatic. No "smoke and mirrors", just a well balanced mixture of parts.
