I'm taking a head to the machine shop next Monday for some porting and OS valves. Which are the better valves to use, 289 or 300 ford? Is 1.78 int too big for a 3.43 bore or a 3.46 bore? The guy doing the work said 5 years ago he did one and used 300 ford valves and they were the best to use. Does it even matter? I hope he can do a good slant head. He's done some Mopar and Chevy heads for ARCA and Busch Cup cars. Somehow I still feel like I'm taking a gamble without seeing a proven slant head from him. I asked him about int flow and him said don't expect to see over 200 cfm @ 28". Anyone know of a better valve to use? I'm starting with the MP .528 lift cam but I want to set the head up so I can go bigger on the cam latter on, maybe .600 lift, if that makes a difference in selection.

The F@rd 300 valves work fine and have been use in a lot of Slants.
The real key is to get your head guy to "rough-out" the new seats and then give the head back to you to grind-out the ports to match. There is a lot of extra iron in those ports that needs to come out.

Try using the search to find some additional information on this.

Thanks Doc, I might try and do my own porting. One of the reasons I decided go with a slant for race car was lower cost.
