Hi guys, Im new here and have searched around on solutions to my problem with no luck so far. I m pretty sure this thing has has leaked out of the top of the accelerator pump piston to some extent the entire time I have had it(around ten years). I had it rebuilt maybe six years ago not because It was running badly but because of the leaking.
This was my first car and I have put around 60k on it and its always started and ran well. I drove it to work for several years but now its more of a weekend/summer car.
A couple months ago frustrated with the leaking I sent it to a specialty carb shop to have it rebuilt again because I assumed it would come back with out the leak........It still leaks at the same place it always has. Ive considered getting a reman holly but I really like the way the car runs with the carter. I have picked up several rebuild kits just to see if i was missing a part somewhere around pump top with no luck. I have double checked the float level several times and set according to rebuild instructions. Im out of ideas.

there is a floating washer that sits on top of the hole. tonight I tried putting a small spring between the pump top and the linage hook just to put some down pressure on the washer....didnt really work. any ideas ive stupidly overlooked?? thanks

What kind of float?

I had an old quadrjet with a plastic float that would absorb gas and sink so the fuel overflowed the top...............

No plastic float. a plastic float came with one of the extra kits i got but i never used it

There are no plastic floats on Carter BBS 1bbl carburetors -- the only Carter 1bbls used on Slant-6 engines.

There should not be any kind of a spring or other modification to try to hold the "floating washer" (external bowl vent cap) you see down to the top of the carb or otherwise alter its operation. It needs to ride on a clip installed in one of the three slots on the accelerator pump stem so that at idle the cap lifts up to the dimension specified for that particular carburetor (usually around 1/8"). If the cap doesn't lift up like this, you'll have hot start/hot idle problems. If the cap lifts up too far or stays up off the carb even at above idle speed, you'll have poor fuel economy. This cap is not a seal; there's not meant to be any seal at this location.

Please define "leak". Are you getting actual liquid gasoline flowing out of the hole at this location? Or are you just seeing traces of fuel here? Specific details please; you may or may not have an actual problem. You will probably want to do the fuel line mod to reduce percolation.

Do not buy a "remanufactured" carburetor. They're garbage.

Wow so much information, thank you! As far as defining "leak" at an idol the top of the carb slowly becomes wet i would say it takes maybe five or six min to notice the moisture. the higher the rpm's the more comes out
