My '82 D150 has 180,000 on it now and is doing fine , but I have a '66 engine from a Barracuda , with 80,000 on it . My plan is to go through the '66 engine eventually and put it in the truck. I'll use the truck head . My question is can I use hydrolic lifters in the '66 block . I don't want to use the solids.

The answer is yes, if you swap the rest of the valve train over to the hydraulic system. I did a similar swap recently and I documented it. I discuss the swap here.

The short answer is you will have to use the 82 cam, the 82 lifters, the 82 rocker arm shaft, the 82 rocker arms, and the 82 pushrods. You will need to reinstall the lifters on the cam lobe that they came off of, so put them in a plastic baggie with a slip of paper indicating the position of the lifter. If you use the 82 head you should be able to bolt up the rocker arm assembly no problem. If the 66 motor is a 170, you are going to have to get custom pushrods made since there was never a factory built hydraulic 170.

If you reuse the head, the main issue you need to be aware of is reinstalling the hydraulic lifters back on their original cam lobe once the hydraulic cam is installed in the 66 block.

If you want to put the '66 engine in your truck you're going to have a problem with the smaller center register on the crank. If your truck has a manual transmission you'll need a flywheel with a smaller center hole to match the '66 crank. If your truck is an automatic you will need a custom torque converter with a smaller nose and '67 or earlier flex plate.

Oh, yeah, good catch Josh. That slipped my mind.

The other options are to get a forged crank from a 68-76 225 and install it while the 66 motor was being freshened up or have the center register on the 66 crank bored out by a machine shop.

Thanks for the information. It's a 4 speed, so I'll get the crank modified .The '66 engine numbers indicate its a 225..

You don't have to modify the crank if it's a 4-speed. You need a flywheel with the smaller center hole.
