Sounds cool, my good Doctor - I'm in.

I guess an "infinte speed" (CVT) might be up next? I may have heard of a 7-speed, hafta check with my Chrysler design buddy who keeps up on that stuff worldwide. The T56 would probably not be a big swap into my Dart at this point. That's a big ticket though: ~$1200 used and ~ $3000 new.

Found out that VIR is only 70 minutes from here, and Roxboro dragstrip is only 50-60 min. Time for some recon... 8)

This is cool 8) Very nice board software.

By the way, I got my A833 OD bellhousing and 4spd. floor hump this week. I'm that much closer to installing a MT in my car :D ! Just had to try out as many emoticons as possible  I can't stop!

Good to see you on the board, Patrick. Hope the 833 OD swap goes smoothly.

Gotta love the stick,

Good to see everything up and running. Looking forward to see how it all turns out. Far better investment than a service manual, and more entertainment than most movies..

Considering the title of this thread is about forward speeds, check out 5speeds.com, they have a dog ring t-5 setup... 'Look mom, no clutch..', just what we need to get when the lottery hits..

Good info on that 5speed site. Nice close ratios on that JT5 too. I'd like to swap my 5th over to 0.68 or 0.78 from the 0.63 at some point. Still, If I stick with my 3.91 gears I can handle many road courses without going to 5th anyway (110 MPH at 5800 RPM in 4th).

Cheers,

Lou

I just got my pedal assembly, so I will also be looking for a 5 speed to put in. Lou will the trans you have hold up to 350 hp?

There is actually a "seven speed" OEM transmission. The C4 Corvette had a 4+3 Muncie for two years. It was basically a 4 speed with an overdirve that also operated on the 2nd-4th gear. Used as a gear splitter you could get seven forward gears. 8)

Mustangsix- yep, forgot about that one. Not quite a legitimate 7 speed, but it counts. That Gear Vendors OD might work for an application like that too.

Andrew - the torque rating on my T5 is 330 ft.-lbs. I have heard of guys saying that it'll handle 350 HP, but that is nearing the upper end. I'd say it's open to debate, but if you're running mid-14s, then you should be OK with it. If you plan on boosting HP on your engine further, then I would recommend going to the Tremec 3550 trans, or even the TKO. These are only marginally more expensive than the T5 (and heavier, TKO by 30 lbs), but can handle a lot more power. The TKO can take anything a Slant can dish out (like 700 ft-lb max), and the 3550 can take around 450 ft-lbs. Keisler has the kits, but they should be about the same to adapt as the T5. I figure I saved about $1000-1400 by doing the engineering and machining myself vs. buying their kit, but it was at least 40 hrs. additional work. Course, anyone following my instructions should take less time...

For swapping from an auto, I highly recommend the hydraulic clutch linkage too, if you can float the dough.

I will be doing a writeup on the T5 swap pretty soon, and I am happy to answer any questions before then.

Cheers,

Lou
