 Post subject: pilot bearing trouble

I'm having trouble installing the pilot bearing in my 74 slant six was orig an auto converting to 4 speed, it seems to be machined for the pilot bearing the bearing seemed to be a tad bit bigger than needed to go in smoothly.plz help[/b]

You're right, 73-up cranks are'nt final machined for the pilot bushing,if they were used behind an auto trans. You have two options: 1, use a late model magnum pilot bushing that presses into the larger crank pilot for the torque converter. or 2, try NAPA p/n 615-1033 that has a 0.914 OD

Mostly the really late ones are that way, most of the forged crank units I've seen from 73-75 were good. The 1976+ cast crank for an automatic is a 90% unfinished bore and requires the NAPA bushing installed with some loctite or will require you to get a roller bearing for a Dakota pickup to put in the crank pocket.
