Hi all I haven't posted over here much I have found you through /6.com You all seem to be a fairly knowledgeable bunch so here is my story.

I have been a big fan of Mopars ever since I first laid eyes on a 67 Dart backlight. My first car was a slant powerd 71 swinger and I now own a 70 Swinger with a 340. I'm in the middle of putting new front frame rails on the Dart. I should be done by summer.

The reason I'm still checking out the slant 6 stuff is last fall I happened upon a 66 Fury I 2dr Post Coupe, complete with leaning tower motivation. I figure any kind of work on the Fury is a few years off but I like to plan and brainstorm ALOT so I'm thinking about building up the Fury as a "Lots of driving fun" cruiser for the summer.

The slant with one bbl moves the Mighty barge fairly well for now but I'd like to give the engine a little kick in the pants. Keeping in mind this is a cruiser and will be "Road Trip Ready" I don't want to do it with unrealistically tall gears. I want to build the slant for driveability and tourque over high HP.

My question is what would you do to a slant to maximize TQ? What can I do with valves, do I need bigger ones? should I mil the head? Header? would a turbo be overkill?


From what I've learned so far about among other things My Dakota the beehive intake is that the long equal length runners help it build torque.

My thoughts are to put a Clifford Dutra Hyper pack intake under the hood. since I want to drive the car often I have also been thinking of MPI Fuel injection in the Hyper Pack intake.

An EFI Hyper Pak...I like the sound of that!

As with most "daily driver" projects, start small and work your way up as needed.
Star with a good tune-up and valve adjust, recurve the distributor as part of the tune-up. A slant that gets lots of advance right off idle feels real strong, even in a heavy car.

Know your rear end gearing, what is it? 2.94 or 3.23 is where you will end-up based on what you discribed.

Careful head work will be the next move. A 3 angle valve job and a small amount of port clean-up work is all that is needed for torque. Mill the head some (.080-.100) if no turbo, just a clean-up pass if a turbo is in the future. A small turbo will make a world of difference but as you seem to know, EFI is the best way to support a turbo's needs for a wider fuel curve.

Hey DI I have had someone else quote the weight of the Fury I to me I am alwas surprised at how readily this information pops out on the boards I frequent. You aren't on Scatpack.com as well are you? Maybe I heard those numbers at /6.com. any how thanks for the input. What kind of car are you running and how much does it weigh. I'm guessing by the way the Fury gets up and moving it is already equiped with the 3:23 rearend It's most likely the stock unit as the tag doesn't reflect any options other than the interior colour trim on the upper door frames.
