I installed the two factory hood scoops on a 71 dart. The slant six engine is upgraded to a super six with dutra dual exhaust. Im thinking of fabricating a dual snorkel air cleaner. Obviously, the idea is to point a snorkel towards each air hole opening.

Has anyone done this? Air flow is a weird science. So would a dual snorkel air cleaner even help with a ram-like effect? Or will it just look like it does?

thanks for your thoughts. God Bless

Keni

I remember reading about a boundary layer on the surface of the car where the air is stagnant. The scoops you have are sitting in this stagnant area. For a hood scoop to work it would would have to be above this boundary layer. Look at the '70 Challenger T/A for an example of a scoop you would want to use, OR even tapping into the high pressure at the base of the windshield where the air intake for fresh air and heater system is. This would be like a cowl intake that brand X liked to use.
My opinion is to keep the scoops you have for their great looks but do a cold/fresh air intake like aggressive Ted has on his Dart.

For a ram air system to work well, you do need a closed(sealed) system for proper ram air system.

On older non aerodynamic cars it is very tough to get a good ram air system due to the bowdery layers its the same effect of the back of a pick up there is an air pocket that builds up and the air flow starts flowing better over the bubble instead of dumping down into the bed its a low pressure type deal

for an old car i would recommend side vents off the side of the car where the air can reach it, although it might not look all to good if you are wanting it to look cool. I have a Ram air set up on my 1984 Pontiac fiero 2m4 i have built a custom intake for it, i do see some extra power from the old 2.5l but not so much i would recommend cutting up and old classic for just a few more hp, if its a drag car id do it other then that. hood scoops do look cool

another thing people tend to forget when making a ram air system is in the rain it will suck it up in as well. I can't drive my fiero in the rain

Change your head light to a 2 light set up. Put your duct hose where the high beams were. Or look up the Olds 442's that had the scoops under the bumper and rock shield.

I want to go with a glass hood with a reversed six pak scoop. To see a Charger like yours with a reversed six pak go to youtube and look for "The Haze!"
