This is my first classic car and is my daily driver. I plan on tinkering and cleaning her up as best as I can. I love that I found this forum and wanted to try to document some of my progress (as well as get some input from you all).

These were taken the day I picked her up. Exterior is in great condition, interior is in good condition, and the engine is good as far as I can tell (never owned or driven in a classic).

I found a local mechanic who used to have a Valiant w/Slant Six so he has helped me get her running pretty good. I've done a simple tune-up changing out the Champion plugs to NGK/wires/seals/air filter. And plan on doing a carb rebuild in a few weeks.

My only major problems ahead of me are that there is a crack in the exhaust manifold and my only working gauge on my instrument cluster is my voltage meter (that should be fun...).

I love this car! And eventually want to do the super six conversion once I get more comfortable working on it.

Good lookin' Signet!

Take a pic of your exhaust manifold (especially the choke pocket).
I may have one from that year that would take care of that problem.

I might also have a spare instrument cluster from my '67 signet that should fix your other gauge problems, knocking around my shop.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Duster - That would be awesome if you have a manifold from this year hanging around. I checked out my choke pocket today and I think I have the fully open choke. See pic below

Let me know if you have one available. Just curious, how urgent is it to fix a cracked manifold?

Next weekend I need to check to see if my entire instument cluster is broken or if it is just the voltage regulator...thingy...

Valiant200kid - I have the blue interior as well. It looks pretty flash. I didn't know my wheel covers were 71. One of my favorite looks about the car.

Today I added a battery tie down. It's not perfect looking but functional.

One thing at a time.

Well I have one with the open pocket left, and as you can see the bolts and stud are all broken off (oddly the choke flap is free and clear and all intact.)

So no go there.

I have a 1967 valiant circuit board that still has the factory blue film covering the copper traces, if you should find that your gauges are not working because the board has corroded.

Thanks for trying on the manifold. I'll have to order a new from RockAuto or something (I'll be sure to verify that it is for my exact year). Not in a rush for this as my crack isn't too significant.

Tearing apart the dash is daunting but I'm just gonna go for it next weekend. I just ordered a gas can in the meantime.

If you are going to order a new one, I'm sure they will be like the later versions with the closed choke pocket. I do know I have a couple of those in much better and useable shape.

The problem there will be the choke thermostat and pull off...you would need the full electric conversion choke in any case, or if a Holley 1920 carb the now discontinued pull off for a 1973 225 slant six Valiant...

What, if any, modifications need to be done to make a manifold with a closed choke pocket work my current set up?

You would have to get a late choke pull off, yours will not work (I might have a used one that's intact laying around as well.

Thinking of getting a dash cap asap but am unsure if it will work given my dash's condition. I would cut off the ridged areas and sand it down a bit. Would probably have to be black to avoid getting some off blue that doesn't match the rest of my car.

Anyone done the cap before?

Hey All,
Attempting my first rebuild. Got everything apart and snapped my fuel line, solved that problem though. My new issue is the "Economizer"...My kit came with a new ball for it but I have no idea how to get the old one out (or if I need to). Also, the gaskets/brass rings that hold the other two balls in are pretty loose and I do not have replacements.

Any ideas how to get the main ball out? Are the brass rings for the other 2 suppose to be moveable?
