Last night I simply by-passed the turbo by re-routing the tubing to go directly from the air filter to the throttle body. Lou spent the night because he has some business in DC on Monday, so in the morning, we went cruising and tuning and the dratted miss is GONE! HOnestly! It pulls clear to 5K without a miss. Lou worked his magic and tuned both fuel and timing, tapping away over there in the passenger's seat, with the lap top on his lap. He is amazing! The car runs quite well now for an NA, mild slant. The turbo is still in the exhaust. It spins up still, but nothing is hooked up. I am sure it will run better once I get that out of there. OH yeah, the stock plugs with .040" gap go in tomorrow. The cold ones with the .022" gap will go.

The plan now is take all the things associated with the turbo out of the car, and just drive it as an NA SLant. I have already pulled the intercooler pipes, and the water injection. The next step is to take the bumper off and get the intercooler out of there. After that, I must put mufflers on. It is running straight pipes now, and would be deafening if I just pulled the turbo without adding mufflers. After the muffler are on, I can pull the turbo and have header pipes made to connect the Dutra Duals to the exhaust pipes.

Lou, Thanks a ton. I have said it before, but you are a genius. You are better than a dyno for sure.

Sam

What happened to your plans about adding EDIS since you thought HEI didn't have enough oomph to light the boosted mixture? Seems kinda drastic yanking the turbo to get around that issue...

What are your plans with the turbo stuff?

How much boost were you running?

Maybe figure out how much boost causes a problem, then stay below that.

Those all sound like logical thoughts. But, I've been fooling with this for 5 years, and it just simply never ran right. I'm getting too old for this. I want to just start driving it, and put some miles on it before my knees get too cranky to shift a stick shift. So it may seem drastic, and impulsive, but this thought has been coming on for some time now. It was great fun to drive it yesterday as the good, simple, reliable, stout, workhourse slant that we all grew to love years ago. I have lost my desire to race, and I just want to go back to driving. I still enjoy watching the races, but the more time I put into my car, the less I wanted to thrash it on the race track. The only place I miss the turbo in our long drive was pulling up hills at low RPM. The turbo was great for that. I can see why truck drivers depend on them.

It is clear that correctly built slants with a turbo can be amazing. However, I think there is something really fundamentally wrong with this combination. Maybe wrong cam shaft, wrong compression ration, wrong turbo size, or something. It was never the beast that Lou's car is. And as I said, this has been going on for at least 5 years. It always went into preignition early and easily. I had to dial so much timing out to eliminate it, that it seemed the turbo hardly was worth the worry. I seldom drove it because it wasn't working right.

We drove 70 miles yesterday, and it just kept getting better and better as Lou tuned on it.

Ed, to answer your question, it seemed to begin breaking up around 5 PSI. A part of me is sorry this did not work out. A part of me is glad to be on this side of the decision. I am looking forward to being able to see the ground on the driver's side of the engine once again, and this is a very energizing path to be on for now. Once the turbo is off, and the exhaust is built correctly, I will start playing with it in the way folks do to improve their NA slants. Pierre, I will eventually end up with EDIS. There are other projects that come first, but that is the plan. The trigger wheel and pick up are on, so that is the first step done.

The turbo will be for sale. I need to give Lou first right of refusal on it before it hits the general market. Thanks to all for living with this struggle with me.

Sam

Well I can understand your dismay. I haven't put much time into my turbo build the car is running but without the megasquirt controlling any ignition.
I have to be honest after reading what you have been through it makes me pretty concerned about trying to use the megasquirt with the HEI for timing control.
I feel like I've already wasted two months of tuning and shake down time trying to install the megasquirt for timing and Datalogging Oh well you live and learn.
My hats off too you though for making the decision to simplifying things good luck and keep us posted
Aaron

You made the right choice, Sam. It's always better to drive and enjoy your car than try to get the "ultimate setup" to work and NOT drive it. Happy to help out some with that!

It was pretty cool doing the timing and fuel curves on MSII. I really need to swap over to MSIII on one of my cars and get into that new age...

Removing the turbo will make a big difference in the high RPM power, I am pretty certain.

Lou

Aaron, I think the programable MSDignition box Lou has on his car is the way to go. It seems pretty reliable, and pretty simple.

Ask Lou. He will know.
Sam

Alafla, I think I have become the opposite of a power junkie. I have two other cars. The BMW 328 is plenty quick, but my Scion xa has a 1.3 liter engine rated at 105 HP. BIG POWA! Took the Dart out for a spin tonight after putting the stock spark plugs back in gapped at .040. I am in love again! This is with the turbow by-passed. It still spins but does nothing as far as the engine is concerned.

Yes, 6530 is the box I am using. You need to order the optional MAP sensor too, about $50. It has a bunch of features, but is not quite as versatile as MS EFI ignition control. It is dead simple and reliable and has worked well for me.

I think it was a good choice, I hope it is, as I sold my turbo to some genius in the us, because I just wanted something simple to just drive.

Just have fun with it!
