Post subject:  Homemade Distributor Wrench

I looked around and could not find a 7/16 distributor wrench I was willing to buy. So I went to lowes and bought a "long" handle wrench for 6.50 then proceeded to bend it. Nice thing about the Kobalt brand is they have a line indicating SAE vs Metric that line is PERFECT for heating to bend at.

Lol give it time. I did find my least favorite thing about using it. Burning my hand on the head. Damn thing gets HOT.

I drilled a hole in the handle of a cheap wrench and welded a peice of round shafting in the hole then welded a short peice of the rod onto the end to form a T shaped wrench.

It is easier to just convert to the later style distributor hold down.

I agree reed but I was not able to find anyone selling that hold down. I took the earlier style off my existing distributor.

Here are the two styles side-by-side:

Here are the component parts of the later (more preferable) style:

Here is how they fit together assembled on the motor (use your imagination for the engine block):

Please note that I am missing the o-ring that goes under the plate on the distributor. If you leave this off you get a BIG oil leak.

The metal u shaped thing clamps the ring bolted to the bottom of the distributor to the engine block holding it steady.

I don't know the exact date of the switch in hold-down styles, but I believe it was in the late 70s. Note that the distributor showing the later style is a lean-burn distributor. The ring is a slant only piece (I think, maybe a v-8 would work), but could probably be easily fabricated from flat stock of metal. The clamp from a v-8 *might* work, but try and find a slant six one first.

These first appear in 1979 model year, so good sources are trucks/vans in the 80's (unfortunately most junkyards pull the dizzies and the claw and bolt go to the wind).

The small block V-8 clamp is too short and wide, so when bolted up it will not clamp in the right area to keep the dizzy in place. The big block clamp has a right angle on it and much more reach, these could be adapted if someone takes 30 minutes out with an angle grinder, cutoff wheel, and a die grinder to make it fit.

FYI.
