Just thinking about the parts I'm getting and the short wb rail I'm going to put them in (sometime in the future) and I was wondering what is the most hp that anyone has squeezed out of a slant? I know 300 is pretty easy, 400 has been achieved with power adders but what about a 500hp slant?

I know it gets to a point where you have to ask yourself "Am I an idiot for dumping all this money into a slant when I could go even faster with a V8?" but seeing as how we are all members of a slant six only forum, I am posting this and you are reading it we will just ignore the "am I an idiot for doing this to a slant" topic....

Starting parts and plans are... Right around 117" wheelbase front engine rail, Hilborn injection unit, Joe Hunt magneto, run on alky. Being in a rail it will obviously not be a streetable motor so far as cam, valves, machine work ect there is no real limit how big or stupid.

Keep in mind this is just an idea that I am working on in my head right now. I have a vision of the rail in my mind and slowly the main parts of the build are finding their way into my garage (Hilborn, magneto and a few other trinkets). This is just the ramblings of a very excited gearhead that has had a few Jack n Cokes, is sitting in the garage and started wondering... So back to the original question... What is the most HP that anyone has ever squeezed out of a slant? What about the best quarter mile time?

Cameron Tilley's turbo street car dyno'd somewhere north of 650.

N/A you have to be pretty stout to make 350, but it is doable.

In a light car 300 will make for a pretty good thrill ride.

I think of it as something else, you can go fast with the V-8...but you will learn more about speed secrets and little tricks by doing them to a slant.


Sure you can just bolt a 4 barrel and headers to a V-8 and make more power than a slant, but the real V-8 builders use everything we fight for to make a few more HP or ft/lbs of torque...(porting, polishing, cam and DCR matching, ratio and transmission choices, timing recurving...even alternate piston and rod choices...only a few select people in the V-8 world elect to make strokers or change the rod ratio...)

If you build a hi-po slant and use all the bread crumbs left by the experienced people on the board, you will be able to apply the knowledge to anything else and be a better builder than 90% of the engine building field.

Tilleys turbo car: 630 HP, 700 ft-lbs, on about 21 psi
Max for nat asp engines is around 360-370 HP on race gas.

350 HP should get you into the 9s in a light rail. How fast do you want to go?

I want to try for 450+hp, Hilborn injection, on alcohol, no turbo, no NOS, short wheelbase rail at least in the low 9's.
The Dragmaster Dart Six rail was in the 10's at 130mph in 1964 so there is no reason that I couldn't beat that today with a chassis that isn't built like a brick along with a few other upgrades to the engine.

450 is pretty high for no alc and no boost. Tons of money will get you there eventually... If I were you I would consider nitrous.

450 might be doable IF you can talk Howard Davis into making you a billet head.

With a stock casting it's a pipe dream.

Charles Meyer went 9:90's with a back motor dragster 15 years ago. No boost, no bottle.

What do you think is the most hp you can squeeze out of a heavily modified stock head? I know there are a lot of variables abut what do you think a realistic number would be?

350 with gas, 400 on alcohol. Just my opinion though.

Interesting to note that people who actually own and race max effort race cars estimate far less than others. My money is with what Dennis , Will an Mark say.

I used to estimate my race motor (sbc 350) at 375hp(flywheel)....pretty stout for an iron headed homebuilt effort. I endlessly heard from "experts" who told me it must make WAY more because I just cleaned their buddy whose dyno guy told him he was making AT LEAST 600HP!

Numbers are for dyno guys.

Success is obtained with combinations.

What Sandy is saying is that there is no "correct" answer. The dyno peak HP number will not mean too much when you are trying to estimate performance on a real track. There are just too many variables with the car setup (combination) that also determine an ET or MPH or lap time or top speed, or whatever.

Just go for it...
