Did some research, and found that the rear end ratio of the axle currently in my car is 3.73:1, so I am thinking of leaving it in. I am trying to determine the best cam and torque converter to use. I have 2 different style 904 transmissions to use.....one lock-up, the other non lock-up. I also am curious of what modifications can be done to 904 as for "shift kits"

Is the Comp Cams 64-241-4 a good choice for my bumpstick?

Thanks

Errr...3.73 was not offered by the factory in any SL6 car and the aftermarket has only come out with that for the 8 3/4 recently, has your rear been replaced?

Sounds like you have a good combo comming together, you can use either 904 & both will take a shift kit.
There is not much offered in performance converters for the lock-up so if that is in the plan, go with the non-lock-up.

What rear do you have? It's not the original one for your 1948 Desoto is it? (*zoinks*)

The 264S Comp cam is still pretty mild, I wish I had grabbed it instead of the 252S grind, but the 252 has given me plenty of torque and kept my gas mileage. The 264 should serve you well, especially if you port the head and mill it to bump up the compression.

Good luck on your build.

Yes, it is the original rear for the car. I am not trying to make a tire burning machine out of it, but I am wanting to use it to go to rod shows and occasional towing of a light trailer. I am looking at all of my options.....you guys confirmed what I thought to be best. It will be so much easier on me to leave that rear in it, all I will have to do is have the drive shaft made up.

As for the trans, 904 non lock-up it is! A few hours and I can have the 2 swapped around. Lou suggested a 2500+ converter. Who makes a good inexpensive 2500+ converter for the non lock-up?

I found these guys on the web for the shift kit:
http://www.pro-built.net/index.cfm?fuse ... oductid=85
Anybody have any luck with them?

Will that Comp Cams 264 cam have a good rumble to it exiting out dual manifolds with a "H" pipe? Or is there a better choice? I looked at the Crane cams 720901 it shows 284 advertised duration.....anybody have any luck with it?

I am planning on increasing the compression by milling .050 to .075 and will do some porting.

Thanks guys for the guidance

My slant rumbles pretty well at idle with a 2.5" single pipe exhaust, a turbo muffler, and a stock Carter BBD ...dual exhaust and a good muffler should be ok too...

Your Desoto in stock trim had a 3200-3400 shipping weight which is similar to the late A-bodies, so with 3.73's (open) and just a Super Six, better cam, porting/milling, you should have something that'll fly pretty well(will be fun), but won't sit there and bake the tires all day like a guy with a big block....

With the eng/trans combo that was in it before, it was churning some good RPM's around 75MPH.......will the slant/904 combo with this rear do the same? Any guess of the approximate RPM at 75 MPH?

Will the super six intake and a carb off a 318 be enough to feed the 264s cammed slant? In time and as $$$ permits, I'd like to use the Hyper Pak intake with a 400 CFM Elderbrock. I've also pondered setting up the "super six" intake with injector bosses for future fuel injection. So many choices!

I am making the dual exhaust manifold set up and I plan on exiting out of 2" beginning to end per side (with a "H" or "X" pipe)....will that be too much exhaust?

Will the stock converter work with this combo? Or will this one from Moparts Racing be the better choice for me?

4876877................68-92 904 2400-2500 stall.....................159.95

Who knows, when all is done, it may turn a respectable time in the 1/4 compared to the 25 seconds it would in stock form! It definitely was no speed demon before!
