How would one go about converting an originally 2wd 904 to use in a 4wd application, say in front of a NP 203 transfer case? I know I have to grab the output shaft and tail housing out of a 4wd 904, but is that it?

I have a fresh rebuilt slant 904 and I am eyeballing a truck currently equipped with a 360/727/NP203 drivetrain. I am pencilling out potential costs and difficulty of this project. Didn't Jeeps and AMCs in the 80s use 904s mated to NP205s? Could I use the output shaft and tail housing from one of those?

Would it be easier to just track down a slant 727 case and swap the guts from the 360 727 into the slant case (except that weighted torque converter)?

Thanks! I am new to 4wd stuff....

Getting the output shaft and stuff from the 4wd 904 and putting it into a slant 904 is no problem. Now, I am not sure if the NP205 and NP203 have the same input shaft.

My suggestion would be to use a slant 727 and swap the guts from the V-8 one like you talked about. A LOT less left to chance.

This is exactly what I did to put a 400 into an 86 Ram Charger that had a 318 in it. Had a 2wd BB transmission and swapped in the guts to mate it up to a NP205.

Thanks! However, I ended up getting a 76 D100 that is 2WD, so problem solved!

......the 203 and 205 do have different inputs.

the 205 is the better box.....lighter and gear drive.

A better TC is the 208 ...but Im not sure if its easily 904 compatible
