The 66 Valiant has a column shift 3 speed manual with the non synchro 1st gear. Linkage is fine, but the ratios in this trans are terrible, and the shift handle is almost on top of my leg in 1st and 3rd.

I would like to eventually swap in an A-833(non od) but they are out of my current budget. Now I have seen people give A-230's away, or sell cheap.

Is it really that bad of a trans? Would it be a worthwhile upgrade while I save for the 4 speed? Im not racing, just daily driving, trying to find something a little more comfortable to drive.

I'd leave the current transmission alone until I found the four speed. At my age I only want to crawl under there once. The A-230 is a good upgrade when a 3 speed is okay but I have not seen many 230s in slant six cars.

I prefer a five speed that has overdrive as the torque of a slant six is a good match for O/D - if there is a group buy in the future, I'm in for that.

The A230 is actually a pretty nice 3 speed... but it is still a 3 speed.
If you find one cheap or for free... I would do the swap, just to get the syncro in first gear
