Is there any truth to what I have heard that the 3 spd slant bellhousing is the same as a 4 spd? I was just curious, since my car has a 3 spd, and going to a 4 spd would make more sense for me than sticking an automatic in the Dart.

Depends!

My 68 \6 barracuda had a 3 speed and the bellhousing would not accept a 4 speed. The mounting surface was too small top to bottom, the bottom bolts holes on the four speed were below the mounting suface. I went back to the junk yard that I pulled the OD 4spd from and got the bellhousing that was on that \6. It had several mounting patterns including one for the 3spd I had as well as the one for the 4spd.

I would assume that at some point when the OD 4spd became more common behind \6's the bellhousings were consolidated

Dave,

How do those headers work for ground clearance and starter clearance? I like your Barracuda, and think it's a sweet ride, but I have been dying to ask you about those headers since I first saw pics of it. Also, what brand are they?

Thanks,

Steve Martin

Sometime in the last run of mopars circa 1974, they started the consolidation, though like the proliferation of small bolt pattern 9" drums some 3 speeds got the 3 speed only bellhousing, but some cars did get a dual pattern 3/4 speed bellhousing, by 1975 mopar switched over to the A-833 O/D and all the slant bellhousings for manual trannies are dual pattern (haven't really seen any 1975+ slant six 3spd applications, but there must be some out there somewhere...)

Is your tranny one of those peanut box column shifted 3 speeds?

Yep, it's the small 3 on the tree setup.

Absolutely no starter clearance problems. The number six tube you see in the picture looping way over gives you all the starter clearance you need. I do think it might interfere with a power booster though.

Like most headers they take away form the ground clearance but the fact that they are dual outlet it's less than a 6 into 1 header. In normal driving I have no issues. I do need to slow way down over speed bumps but otherwise that's the only issue I have had.

The headers are Hooker but I do not think they make the dual outlet ones anymore.
