Howdy Slanters,

I am getting underway on my GM 200-4R trans install with Wilcap adapter plate.

I bought a trans from Extremeautomatics.com (mimicking akbmotorsports), but with "stage II" internals and ~2800 billet lockup 9.5" converter. This should hopefully be long term reliable on street and track with the HP levels I am targeting (400-500 crank HP). Also, this should allow fast turbo spooling, yet also have lockup for good MPG.

Here are pics of the start of the install:

I am following Andy's install fairly closely and hope to use my stock column shifter. Thanks for your work and descriptions, Andy!

Hopefully this will be ready and well tested by the May Slant 6 race in Hagerstown, MD.

Enjoy the pics and more to come...

Lou

Very cool. Looking to see how this all comes out. Is the red plate a factory 727 conversion plate?

And where are you guys sourcing the flywheels from fro this conversion?

Thanks, guys.

Yes, the red plate is a factory mid-60s SB 727 to Slant 6 adapter plate. Bought it for $50 at Iola, WI swap meet back in 1992 before I even thought about an OD auto.

The A500/42RH swap may not have been great, but it sure was cheap. $140 for a used trans, custom LU converter for $400 and $50 adapter plate, plus plenty of fabbing of course...

The new Wilcap plate/kit comes complete with crank spacer ring and GM style flywheel. Wilcap included all bolts except for the torque converter bolts.

I am starting to fab the new lower X-member and shift linkage. Did some measuring this evening and mocked up some box tubing. Rec'd the Lokar dipstick and adjustable shift arm (trans side) and some rod ends today, as well as a 2005-7 Hemi Ram 2500 man trans starter, which fits nicely.

Measured and ordered a new driveshaft from pstds.com today. Denny's made my last one, but they have a 4 wk lead time! 2 days from pstds...

Slant on,

Lou

GM-style flexplate w/ring gear and stock GM-type converter. So, I can use any GM converter.

Yes, Wilcap did a nice job with that. Kit was worth every penny.

Thanks Brian and all,

Hoping to spend a good bit of Sunday on this and get most of the major work done. Saturday is Rugby day. Will have to wait for a few parts to arrive next week to run it. Can't wait...

looks like my distinction as having the only known slant with a 200-r4 (pinky finger on corner of mouth) 'IN THE WORLD' is coming to an end. back to being just a regular guy. 8)

i am excited to see another one going together. looks great, lou. more pics as you go please. look forward to seeing how you set everything up.

maybe this will encourage some others to proceed.

andy.

Awesome work Lou and Andy! I am researching overdrive automatics earnestly now that I have a truck with 3.9 rear gears. I will follow this swap closely.

Making progress...

- Figured out shifter mechanism and have parts cut out and ready for welding. Similar to Andy's - thanks again!
- Ordered longer TV (kickdown) cable than came with the tranny kit and Lokar dipstick/tube and those fit well. See: "Teckpak USA GM 200-4R & 700-R4 Detent Cable 1978-1992" (from Amazon)
- Bolted up converter to flywheel/flexplate using ARP 10mm X 1.5 mm pitch X 15 mm long bolts. PN ARP 2307305 Pro Series Torque Converter Bolt or ARP 2307304. Had to add 0.080" spacer washers so they did not bottom out in the converter. Loctite - check.
- Ordered and received driveshaft from pstds.com - fits perfectly. Alum 3.5"X55"c-c shaft is 13 lbs vs. previous steel 3" shaft 15lbs which was 10" shorter.
- Mocked up X-member and rec'd steel box tubing to help with that.

Hope to hit this hard this weekend and maybe get it running? We'll see... More pics to come.

Lou

Almost there. Finished building new lower X-member and shifter linkage. All of that is bolted up and adjusted. Just a few more things to bolt up and adjust! Sometime this week I'll fire it up and drive it... Pics to come...
