Hello sages,

What would be the correct bearing style to install on an 8.75 rear that will be used for road racing and auto X?

Thanks,

Greg

Tapered roller have a higher thrust capacity. That's what I used on my road race car and what my road racing and autocross friends use on their's.

Tapered roller (OEM) are probably best. However, there are successful road racers using the green bearings (I like the snap ring type). MAKE SURE that the axles do not butt against the center block (check and grind axle ends if necessary, or remove center block in carrier). I think this is the main cause of green bearing failures and I have seen a few cars with axles installed wrong (block still in place, hard side load on bearing).

I have not had a green bearing failure, but have so far not raced those cars. However, you know how I drive on the street... I have tapered rollers on the 64 Dart and green on the 68 Dart.

Note that all Ford 8" and 9" rears, at least from the 60s-70s, were ball bearings (same as green) from the factory. Lots of those were and are road raced.

Lou
