Well, the good news is that the transmission in my Art Car Dart is not liquefied, as I had feared. I finally got up under the car to begin the process of pulling it to rebuild, and I found that the nut holding the output flange onto the tailshaft had backed off, letting the flange slip off the splines. The splines on the output shaft itself are fine, thankfully, but the splines on the softer metal of the flange have been wallowed out from spinning while partially engaged.

I'm the last one to install this, and I'm pretty sure I followed the FSM specs when I did it. My torque wrench only goes up to 150 ft-lbs, however, so the applied torque wouldn't have been that accurate unless I borrowed a bigger wrench... I don't remember at this point. The torque spec is 175 ft-lbs for the shaft nut, with the ribbed side of the nut toward the washer. It also says to put the "3 projections" on the washer toward the flange, which would put the concave side toward the flange, which makes sense.

So here are my questions:

1. Does anyone have one of these output flanges laying around? It's a '64, originally with a ball-and-trunnion driveshaft. I've got an email out to Pat Blais, but I assume from past experience that if he has one, he'll want a lot of money for it.

2. Is there any trick to getting this thing to stay on aside from what the FSM says?

3. Should the ribbed nut and lock washer be replaced? Mine look pretty worn at this point, but I'm not sure if this is normal.

If you have a source for that washer and nut please let me know!

I have a good used flange if you can not find one locally.
