Hey guys,

The tip of the dipstick has snapped off. Does anyone have a 62 they could give me some measurements on? I'm sort of winging it on the oil level at the moment. I have a dip stick for a 1978 engine, but its dip stick is mounted in a different location and it is bottoming out.

I think a 62 slant 6 B body dipstick will be tricky to find.

I have a 62 A body dipstick to measure for you, but the pans and dipstick marks are possibly different.

My suggestion is to cut the long stick so that it does not bottom out, then drain and fill your sump and filter with 5 qts of oil, put the dipstick in and make a new mark with a file where it is full with the 5 qts.

Greg

as long as the tube and stick match each other, it should read fine. the blocks are the same, the oil level should be the same as its measuring the top which is determined by windage effectively. get a tube and stick that go together and fit in the car and us them.

I disagree.

The 1962 b body pan has a vastly different shape than other (more common A / F Body pans)... So In my opinion tube, Stick and pan need to match for accuracy.

Even though the volume is the same, the shape or placement of that volume may be different.. Thus meaning a different level / Incorrect level on the stick if all 3 components are not matched.

Hi Greg,

That's a great idea, I don't know why I did not think of that. Going back on what you said about the different oil pans, you stated 5 quarts but my 1962 Maintenance book (I have an original) stated 4 quarts. My oil light usually stays on between 3 and 7 seconds before going out. Do you think I'm running it low? It can take 5, we put in an extra quart before taking off from California.

The other issue I have apart from the drain pain is that my oil stick tubes are in different locations. The 1962 tube is close in to the carburetor while the 1978 tube is about 8" forward of that.

Someone on Facebooks https://www.facebook.com/groups/1960.19 ... .880.Page/ named Charles sent me some photos and the stick looks about 17 3/4" inches long. Mine by comparison is over 20 inches.

Thanks for the responses.

Paul
