Post subject:  Water Pump Mounting Bolts Question
I am in the process of removing an aftermarket Frostemp 400 A/C system from my 1966 Coronet Slant Six. I have removed all components except the adapter platform that the York compressor sat on. That adapter platform is mounted to the engine using 3 of the 6 water pump mounting bolts (top, upper right, and lower right facing the engine compartment from the front). Will there be a problem in removing and re-installing those 3 water pump mounting bolts while I remove the adapter platform? Will there be a water leak? Is there a best way to do this? Note, the water pump and gasket a fairly new and look to be in good shape - they were replaced less than 5 years ago according to the documentation I got when I purchased the car in May 2022 and the car has been driven very little over that time. Thanks for the help!!

Jon,

It is hard to say for sure, but I think you will be fine as long as you do not stress/deform the water pump case or put a significant load on it while you are removing the AC unit. Put the mounting bolts back in (or possibly you will need to find/buy shorter ones so they do not bottom out) and it should maintain the seal. You may have some water leak out while the bolts are out, so a suitable drain pan under the car is advisable.

Those three bolts are "thru" bolts. As long as you don't loosen any other bolts you shouldn't have any leaks. As stated above, you might need bolts, about 3/8 to 1/2 shorter.

Keep hold of that compressor bracket; someone is going to want to copy it. The old aftermarket A/C setups came with a better-designed bracket than can be bought now. It's probably for the brick-shaped York/Tecumseh compressor, and works with the readily-available adapter to put a Sanden/Seltec where the York/Tecumseh used to go.

As far as I know, all those brackets were basically the same, with only slight variations. Yes they can be converted to mount the Sanden style compressor using the adapter. The main problem is the drive pully on the crank is too far forward (on all the ones I have seen), to work on "A" bodies. That mount can be adapted for "A" body use, by using the OEM crank A/C pulley, and mounting the "sanden" adapter bracket rearward. You will also have to modify the belt tensioner so it will line up with the rearward location of the belt. Here are some pics of that modification.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll tackle it today and report back. I will be quite careful not to disturb the water pump as the bracket comes off. Most of the weight is gone since I took the York compressor off the mounting adapter plate yesterday.

I'll clean up the adapter plate and bracket and take some pictures to post. The metal is quite thick on the adapter and the two braces that were used in addition to it. Probably around 1/8" thick steel. I'll hold onto it for awhile to see if anyone here is interested in it. I don't have the idler pulley that was attached to it though.

I might be interested in buying the whole A/C setup from you if you wi$h to $ell it.

Compressor, Evap core, Lines, Condener core, brackets etc.. the whole shebang.

I've seen two kinds: one mounts the compressor horizontally, and the other mounts it at an angle. I wasn't paying close enough attention at the time (and it was long enough ago) that I couldn't say if/what variants there were within those two types.

I'm sorry to say I do not have all the components anymore. Because I have essentially zero room to store fairly large car components (I don't restore - just maintain), I started chucking them in the trash as they came off. I guess I'm a little embarrassed by that but I really didn't think anyone would want the system. Because of that I was not careful in removing components so, for instance, I mangled the condenser coil as I pulled it out of in front of the radiator. Also, I cut the metal tube from the condenser to the dryer.

Sorry! I only have the bare compressor, the mounting bracket (without idler pulley), and two stabilizer bars.

Folks,

The job is complete. The A/C mounting bracket has been successfully removed without any issues with the water pump. As you folks mentioned above I did have to get a couple shorter bolts. This is because the adapter bracket added almost 3/4" (1/4" thick steel plate + mounting bosses) to needed mounting bolts. I took out 1 3/4" bolts and replaced them with 1" bolts which fit perfectly (plenty of thread length without coming out on the back side of the through holes). And, yes, the adapter bracket and stabilizer bars are full 1/4" thick steel!
