Do you have photos?

I've dealt with this twice where the cam and oil pump gear got into a disagreement and they lunched each other. What cam are you using? Personally I only run either a stock cam, or a stock core re-ground by Oregon Cam Grinding. As far as pumps, I only run OE pumps, excepting a unit I bought from Doug Dutra that he souped up and put a hardened gear on.

To help diagnose this, you need to answer some questions:

1) Who made the cam?
2) Who made the oil pump?
3) What timing chain was used?
4) Are you running a windage tray?
5) Are you running a cam stop?
6) Where any oil system modifications made?
7) Where any oil pan modifications made?

Well, at this point you'll need another cam and at least a new gear on the oil pump. Did you lubricate the oil pump gear with engine assembly lube when you installed the new pump? If not, those gears will start to eat each other pretty quickly. A lot of heat is generated due to the force required to turn the oil pump.

We used to buy Melling oil pumps, but they've been unobtanium new for years now...

Eh? There is nothing such as a "spin on filter oil pump". All Slant-6 oil pumps accept spin-on filters. If your vehicle originally had a replaceable-elephant (element) oil filter, and you want to use spin-on filters, all you do is remove the replaceable-elephant filter, install the threaded nipple, and then you can spin filters onto the pump all day long (as long as you do it one at a time).

Ok yea I changed from the element one to the one I got now thinking only difference is new one had spin on filter instead of drop-in filter for simple reason the drop in I couldn't get to seal and quit leaking

I strongly suggest finding a decent used pump to use, assuming the gear wear looks good. I do this on all my engines (as of the late 90s), and they have always worked fine, whether in daily driver street cars or racecars. I have never had an oil pump related failure (knock loudly on wood). I also usually use regrind cams.

My 2 cents...

Lou

As Dan said, those pumps (and I believe ALL Slant 6 pumps) are the same and interchangeable. Just put a spin on filter on the one you have.
