Around then was when they went from blue to black engine color from the factory, can't say exactly what year they did so.
I have an 85 d150 that originally had a black engine but I painted it blue just because I like that blue that Chrysler used better than black. And fluid leaks show better against the blue than against black so I get a "head start" more advance notice before it gets too bad....

'84 was the first year for black rather than blue. More detail here. Given free choice, I'd be tempted to paint it the '60 Plymouth 225 engine colour: deep metallic turquoise (PPG/Ditzler № 11923), with this decal on the valve cover.

My '82 D150 has a black engine, so it's not original.
Was the '84 and up all Toluca production with the extra light crank? Mine has nothing on the engine VIN pad, so I'm thinking that it was a warranty replacement. Or dug out of one that had one.

Okay well it’s a black engine, I could definitely send a picture tmrw, and I’ve really been looking for a serial number to see what exact kind of slant six I have but I don’t know we’re! It is. But thanks for all the information that helps a lot to clarify, but ya could be too that I might have a custom engine or just swapped out with a different one. Mabye someone know we’re the serial number could be on the black engines, or mabye someone has a picture of one. Cuz google won’t show me exactly or tell me exactly.

The numbering system we have all grown accustomed to certainly doesn't apply to the original engine out of my 85 either.
