a few questions on the Romac dampers

I am looking to put on one the slant in the 68 Barracuda, to add robustness to the crank.
The motor crank is a last year 87 light weight cast crank.
For drag racing I shift at 6200 RPM.
In the two autocross events that I ran, the engine can hang in the 3500 to 5000+ RPM range for 50+ seconds at time.

a couple of questions

1) It appears there are two Romac dampers, their online info is a little confusing, depending upon which web site is visited.
I have posted links to both below. I want to order the right one.
It appears that the 0224SA is that correct for a cast crank.
Interesting that the web site that mentions the differences does not give part numbers
and the site that give part numbers does not mention the differences.

Greg O and Rick C,, I think that both of you are running Romac Dampers and I think you are both running steel cranks, but I don't know the vintage.
What side of the crank centerline is your timing cover marker on and what Romac damper part number did you order and use?

2) Anyone with actual experience, will a slant six AC pulley, the one that fits on the back side of the damper, bolt to a Romac damper?

thanks

I have used Romac.

They are heavier than stock ones, will require a shorter alternator belt as well.

I have only used the red series. The Alloy parts seem interesting.

I have never used a front or rear O.E. PS / AC pulley on mine.. I would guess they do not fit. But I also have not tried one.

Maybe Just get damper Dudes to Remanufacture your OE Unit.

I use the same one Greg does. The Anodized alloy series doesn't have a pulley machined into it from the picture? I also don't know about the other pulleys.

Thanks for the replies, I have a nice new stock style damper, a Power Bond PB1001 N
looking to upgrade that one.

The Red is the 0224 AS 'all steel'
The Gold is the A0224 SA 'steel inner alloy outer'

I assume that your timing mark lined up properly.
What side of the crank centerline is your timing cover timing mark on.
That seems to be a determining factor.

This is the Romac Damper that I am finding on ebay, it appears to be the SA Gold that has stee inner and alloy outer

I have one of the Romac dampers, # 224SA. It has the steel hub and aluminum outer ring.

The depth of the front is about 0.44 inches. The black mark is where the zero mark is for timing.

The overall thickness is about 1.6 inches, the belt groove starts about 0.6 inches from the front and is about 0.4 inches wide
The overall height is about 2.3 inches.

The depth of the back side of the damper is about 0.86 inches. The diameter of the inset part (front and back) is about 4.5 inches.
I hope this helps with your decision.

I can't remember about my timing mark. I think it was for the D/S bolt on tab. But my oil pump is over there and I was using a newer timing cover so I think I re-marked mine when I painted it black and used the passenger side tab. Just so you know you will have to paint it. The shiny silver makes it almost impossible to see the timing marks. At least it did for me.

On mine, I am going to try some timing tape. I have never been able to keep them on stock balancers, but maybe something new will work better.

Matt, thanks for the photos.
From those it appears that an additional pully will not bolt to the Romac damper and maintain the OE belt spacing.
I am seeing additional thickness on the Romac damper from the edge of the V grove to the rear and front outer edge of the Romac damper.
Thanks again.
I have posted photos showing how closely the V groves are spaced on a stock style damper.

I did a little looking around John, a Romac does not appear to accept the stock pulleys.

Roger that

It appears that adding AC to the car just saved me a couple hundred bucks!

My 2 cents:

Agreed that stock front/rear pulleys will not fit. Note that Aussies never had the cast crank, so this will not be designed (as much as they might have done that) for the light crank. I have run stock factory dampers on my cast crank motors, hopefully the same one that came with the motor, or I bought some NOS parts new in box several years ago off Ebay. I imagine the Romac would work fine, however, in terms of damping. ATI makes custom dampers and I think you can call them with your crank specs. Mike Jeffrey did this I know. Romac has the degrees set up for the ~64 style bolt-on timing tab. I always mark mine for the later 68 era tab when I have the engine on a stand. I've never run the alloy version, only the all-steel version.

The motor in my car is a light cast crank with a stock damper on it. It's been over 7000 and not tossed anything on the ground yet.

I have the high side limit set at 6800. With the 4.86 gears in I have noticed if you're not right on top of the 1-2 shift it will hit it.

What is supposed to be the advantage of a romac balancer vs a stock replacement?
Apparently not much, if it won't work with stock stacked on pulleys.
Sounds like something useless except for a track only car.
Why would you want a damper comprised of 2 dissimilar metals? Wouldn't the differing expansion and contraction properties cause problems? Yeah, I understand the 2 layers wouldn't be butting up against one another directly, but would be separated, presumably by some plastic/urethane/rubber ish material.

I've heard of people using balancers designed for 440s on /6s too, and they had the same drawback of being thicker and stock /6 belts and pulleys not lining up on those. Is This romac, also a 440- derived part?
I do like the imprinted timing marks seemingly all the way around ....if it lines up with the tab you are using.
