Anyone have a good feel for what this should go for at a salvage yard? Found one today for $250, but I haven't been pricing them to know if that is fair.

Just curious,
Jerry

Please specify axle and body style. If it's an A-body 8.75" axle with 3.23 SG, you got a helluva deal. More like $400 and up from informed sources.

8.25" a-body rear with 3.23 SG for $250 is pretty fair, and a good deal.

In the "Pick N'Pull" brand junkyards around here a rear end is $60 drum to drum regardless of what ratio or type etc. Make sure when you take it apart and to the counter, that it is all assembled in one piece. Otherwise if you take the drums off and axles off seperately when your at the counter they charge you for them individually and prices skyrocket well over the $60 for the complete assembly.

Good deal from my experience. Anything with SG is over 400. I'm looking at a 3.55 non SG for 200.

Sorry Lou, should have been more specific.
It is a 8.75" Posi, but I don't know what body style. Are there any
clues to look for or measurements to make?

Jerry

A body unit will have small 4" bolt pattern (7/16" diam studs) and 43" spring perch-perch width and around 55" axle flange-flange (last number can't remember exactly). Drums will be 10X1.75" - narrow.

Someone could have converted it to BBP, in which case the spring perch width is the giveaway. That rear would be worth quite a bit more then.

Converted or not, it does have the LBP. So, I guess the spring perch width will be the determining factor. What's a decent way to get an idea whether the unit is worn out or not? I doubt the yard owner would want me to pull the cover off, so is there tell-tale signs to look for?

Assuming it's not from an A-body, would it be possible to easily modify for the Dart Sport (move perches)? Would a casting number help determine what model car it's from?

Jerry,

No casting number help that I know of. If it's a bigger car rear, then it will either have to be narrowed, or use some huge offset wheels. If it has a rear cover, it's NOT an 8.75" axle - would have to be 7.25, 8.25, or 9.25".

Perches wouldn't be that hard to move - narrowing is a lot tougher.

Tip - look for a Ford 8" out of a Granada, Maverick, Pre'75 Mustang with 5 lugs - BBP and a lighter, cheaper rear than an 8.75". I am currently looking for one, but haven't looked hard yet.

Lou
