Has anyone had any trouble getting replacement ones for a 7&1/4" axle?

I ordered some from Carquest and they were too shallow, and the lip diameter was too small, when I sent the car in to replace my outer wheel bearings the mechanic said the springs flew off the lip when he installed them, the outer dimension was extremely snug and there was a huge difference in the quality of the seals. The Carquest seals were made by National.

Has anyone replaced axle shaft seals in these rearends with success? The Chrysler dealerships listed one for $14 CDN and they should be in tomorrow. Here's hoping theyre not the same as the National seals.

Another thing that bothers me is that these seals cost $24 CDN each. As an industrial mechanic I know the seal in that package was wort only about $9-11 CDN LIST in the National catalog, Im sure of it. But thatll come up when I go back to demand a refund.

Guys, the idiot at the Chrysler dealer didnt bother to check availability before he promised the seal the next day. The seal has been discontinued for 10 years. Partsource also lists the incorrect National seal.

Napa, however, shows CR seal # 15348 or something like that for a 61-72 7&1/4" rear end. With my luck that seal will also be incorrect, and I'll be cooked.

Now guys, if you have a car with a 7&1/4" rear end from 61-72 with the medium sized outer bearing, you are well advised to locate the proper seal and stock up on them before they fail, because these seals are obviously much harder to find than anyone at the parts counter will tell you. The Carquest guy who sold me those seals was supremely confident that they were correct, and has caused me a lot of grief as a result.

Hope this doesnt happen to any of you. Cheers

I thought that a different seal was used 60-63 and a slightly larger one for the 64-72, then a bigger one for 73 and up.
It sounds like these have all been "superseded" into one number so who knows which one of these seals are in the box.
Take some measurments, OD, shaft size and width, seal manufacturers have dimensional listings which can help you get the correct seal.
Call Randy's Ring & Pinion and see what they say.

Dr. Dodge hit the nail on the head. Take the ID of the housing and the OD of the axle. Then just walk into a local seal/bearing/hyd. store give them the #'s, show them the old one, and tell them the application. They should be able to tighten you up. If they don't know what you're talking about go to another store.
At anyrate, the seals shouldn't be more than 10bux

now get to it killer!

Guys, thanks for all the responses. The correct seal was Federal Mogul/National 5124. Other than color it was an exact match.

My refund claim with Carquest is ongoing after three weeks.
