Post subject: Gear Vendor's OD Unit
PostPosted: Sat Feb 28, 2004 8:47 pm
Anyone have any thoughts on using the "Gear Vendors" over/underdrive unit? I have been kicking around the idea of installing one on my '79 Volare (Super Six/Dutra Duels/904/3.23'open' daily driver. Its rather pricey ($2500 approx).
The main reason would be to help protect some of my assets from the oil companies. I haven't 'pushed the pencil' yet, but with gas knocking on the $2/gallon door its looking more promising.
Unfortunately, they do not make a unit for the rear pump 904s.
My original plan was to set up both cars (buy two adapters and the assorted electrical componets) and swap the actual unit between them. Only eight bolts are used so it would be like swapping third members on the 8 3/4 (only lighter).
Anyway, thats out, so I would only be using it on a daily driver 200 miles per week car. Any and all commets are welcome.
Thanx,

I had given some thought to one for my D150. I didn't know they were $2500. At that price, I think I'd go with the Keisler 5spd conversion before the GV unit. The only drawback that I see to the GV unit is the extra weight hanging off the tailshaft with no extra support.

Why not swap in an OD A-883? They have a 0.73 final drive, and are cheap.

I was my understanding that the GV unit on the A833 would make it a virtual 8 speed transmisson.
