just wanted to know the best procedure for making sure all the junk is out of the coolant passages, before i replace the rad, only to potentially clog it again a month down the road.

Even disassembling the engine completely and having it hot tanked doesn't always get all the junk out. A cooling system flush can help, but won't get out sediment and other junk in the bottom of the water jacket. A coolant filter in your upper radiator hose it probably your best bet. I had a 2-piece aluminum filter from JC Whitney, but could never get it apart to change the screen.
